Gardening help please! What do I do with Decorative Cabbage?

I planted decorative cabbage last year. I am not sure if it is supposed to regrow, or if it is only a yearly plant? What do I with the plant this year to I trim it, or let it grow?

Hi Jed -

Usually decorative cabbage (kale) will not last very long and usually gives up by the time it becomes very hot. Most gardeners just toss them and replant them with something more tolerant (and showy) once it becomes warmer.

Happy Planting!

Reply:I'd cut off anything that's dead, and leave the plant in the ground. If it comes back, great - enjoy it, and learn from it - you may get to see it go to seed.

If it doesn't look like it's putting out any new grown 3-4 weeks into spring-ish weather, move on with your life and plant something else there. If you compost, toss it in your pile, it you don't, leave it in the ground. Be careful abotu planting cabage cousins in the same space time and again.
Reply:Hon, flowering cabbage is just like edible cabbage in that it's an annual (meaning that it lives for only one season.)

If you live in a warmer area, it may have wintered over but dig it up just the same. It would most likely "bolt."

Flowering cabbage is a nice, cool-weather annual, and it will be available soon in your local greenhouses.
Reply:I've only planted it once but it grew huge and well into the fall. It's an annual plant meaning it does not come back from year to year. On rare occasions, an annual will come back. I'd say since it's spring, wait and see what happens. If nothing happens by May, it's not going to and yank it out to make way for your new annuals. Last year I did double petunia's and they were great. I live in Michigan and my tulips are already 6-7 inches high and daffodils are bloomed. Val
