Anyone have good tips for drying up your milk supply besides cabbage leaves?"?

I am just starting this process today and after 6 hours I am already in pain and engorged. Is there some herb or something out there that will speed up the process?

Cabbage leaves do nothing to dry up your milk. Their benefit lies in acting like a cold compress to help ease the pain.

Is it possible for you to gradually wean over the next week or so? If so, that would probably be the most comfortable option for you. You could try keeping up your normal nursing/pumpings and just cut out two of those for the first day or two, then work on cutting out another, then another. This will let your milk supply go down a bit and your body will get the idea that it needs to gradually stop producing, which should help with engorgement.

If you need to stop cold turkey and can't pump, you have a couple of different options. One view is to not pump to express or even take a hot shower since that relieves pressure and tells your body to make milk. Personally I tried that a few times and I was leaking like crazy. You could also just express enough to take the edge off the pain.

Other than waiting it out, you can treat the symptoms by taking some pain killers and using cold compresses. Good luck.
Reply:Patience and Advil. I was in so much pain i filled up a large container with ice water and submerged my boobies. Shi*!!! I remember how painful that was. Just wait it out for a few days. It will be hard, but its the only way to do it.
Reply:after my 3rd son i used cabbage leaves, they DID help my milk to dry up quicker! did it2X before without cabbage leaves, Keep replacing them as soon as they start to wilt! /i used them in my sports bras and they worked perfect!!!

However rapid weaning is rarely advised and even under the care of a competent breastfeeding specialist it is still potentially dangerous.
Reply:i never breast fed but when i had my kids i would wear a tight bra, use breast pads and dont let any milk out at all, within a week it should be fine

i also took advil when needed for the pain and it helped me out alot mine dried up within 5 days or so
Reply:an old remedy passed down in my family from a great-grandmother is called 'binding'.

for this process, you bind your breast (snugly, but comfortably) with a nice sized peice of cloth...i used a strip of clothe, wrapped it around my chest and put on a snug sports bra over it. your milk will be dried in about four days...don't shower...the hot water will trigger 'let down' and cause engorgement!

'binding' stifles your milk ducts from producing milk, so that you don't get engorged. and it's surprisingly comfortable! it took three days for me. hope this helps...it's helped four generations of mothers' in my family!

p.s. a lot of mothers who've never heard of this are going to give me a 'thumbs down', but that's because they've never heard of 'binding' or never tried it.

have an open mind ladies....this really works, and without medication, painful engorgement, embarrassing leaks, etc... it's technically the same process as "Bonnie", below! get a grip ladies! it really works!
Reply:i used cabbage right away and they dried up in just a few days. it does help. also you can ask your doc to give you a shot.

%26lt;edit why the thumbs down? it worked for me. so what? you got a problem with it? im sure.
Reply:If you can wean slowly, it will help and reduce your chance of getting an infection.
