Cabbage Soup Recipe

6 large green onions

2 green peppers

1 or 2 cans of tomatoes (diced or whole)

3 Carrots

1 Container (10 oz. or so) Mushrooms

1 bunch of celery

half a head of cabbage

1 package Lipton soup mix

1 or 2 cubes of bouillon (optional)

1 48oz can V8 juice (optional)

Season to taste with salt, pepper, parsley, curry, garlic powder, etc.

Directions:

Slice green onions, put in a pot and start to saute with cooking spray.

Cut green pepper stem end off and cut in half, take the seeds and membrane out. Cut the green-pepper into bite size pieces and add to pot.

Take the outer leafs layers off the cabbage, cut into bite size pieces, add to pot.

Clean carrots, cut into bite size pieces, and add to pot.

Slice mushrooms into thick slices, add to pot.

If you would like a spicy soup, add a small amount of curry or cayenne pepper now.

You can use beef or chicken bouillon cubes for seasonings. These have all the salt and flavors you will need.

Use about 12 cups of water (or 8 cups and the V8 juice), cover and put heat on low. Let soup cook for a long time - two hours works well. Season to taste with salt and pepper.

Why does the colour of red purple cabbage change when it is cooled?

Colour change in red purple cabbage is due to the pigment anthocyanin and when the cabbage is cooled the activity of anthocyanin decreases leading to a change in color.

Has anyone had success with the cabbage soup diet?

What were the positive/negative factors? Did you follow it up with a diet and keep losing weight??
Has anyone had success with the cabbage soup diet?
hahaha, my mom tried this years ago - basically the only thing I remember is that she, well you know, passed gas a lot and used the bathroom a lot - cabbabe will do that to ya you know

didn't do much for the weight loss though - except for cleaning you out
Reply:I have never seen any success or should i say long term success with any type of diet that restricts what a person eats or tells them to eat a certain type of miracle food. I have fought with my weight a long time and all of the ones I tried like that one, either did not work at all or worked for a little while then the weight came back. I am doing Weight Watchers now, and I may be biased, but this is the best thing I have done yet. It is not a diet so much as a lifestyle change
Reply:Never tried it, but I've heard that you'll get really tired of the soup and it is not worth it. ;s
Reply:Fad diets dont work. What happens is your body goes through shock and then you see weight loss. After a while your body will recognize what is happening and will adjust to the new routine. Weight loss will stop and you will gain back everything.
Reply:yes i have ,its okay you will lose weight but you will also gain it back and the soup is awful but if you like that kind of food you will do good ,till u get tired of not eating real food ,the first 3 days are the hardest ,you will get lots of energy by day 3, and this does clean your system out ,good luck

Yes, the red versions really are more nutritious! Here's links to breakdowns for cabbage:

Unfortunately I don't have handy links to free data about the differences between 'regular' and red onions but the red onions also show similar increases in vitamins, minerals and proteins when compared to white onions.

Proper way to raise cauliflower @ cabbage?

Cualiflowers can be quite temperamental and are not easy to grow. If you re new at this, stick to growing small cabbages and brussels sprouts at first.

They like an alkaline soil, so you need to apply lime the previous autumn, but don't worry too much if you haven't done this. buy small plants, and plant them at the suggested spacing (it varies for each type of cabbage).

You will need to put nets over them to keep off the birds and rabbits, and protect the young plants from slugs.

  • Recipe for sweet cabbage tarts? They are German, I believe. Is there a name for these?

    2 crust pastry recipe

    2 Tbsp. olive oil

    1 red onion, chopped

1/2 large head red cabbage, chopped

    3 cloves garlic, minced

    3 Tbsp. balsamic vinegar

    1 tsp. sugar

    1/2 cup water

1 cup cubed Gruyere or Swiss cheese

    1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Prepare pie crust and divide dough into four pieces. Roll out each between waxed paper into 7" rounds. Fit each into a 4" tart ring, or simply put the crusts on two cookie sheets. Set aside.

Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Saute onion in olive oil in a large skillet until soft. Then add cabbage, vinegar, sugar, and 1/2 cup water. Cover pan and simmer for 10 minutes, until cabbage is soft, stirring frequently. Then uncover pan and cook for 5-8 minutes longer on medium high heat, stirring frequently, until liquid is absorbed.

Divide half of the cabbage mixture evenly among the pastry circles. If you aren't using the tart rings, just mound the mixture in the center of the circles of pastry. Sprinkle with Gruyere cheese cubes and grated Parmesan cheese, and top with remaining cabbage mixture. Fold crust edges over the top of the cabbage mixture, pleating to form a ruffled edge. Bake tarts at 425 degrees for 20-30 minutes. Remove tart rings and serve. Serves 4

Can you see cabbage juice as an indicator for acidic and basic substances?

    wat?
Can you see cabbage juice as an indicator for acidic and basic substances?
The question is just asking if cabbage juice can be used as a pH indicator, something that tells you if something is acidic, basic, or neutral.

    To answer your question...

Yes. Cabbage juice can be an effective indicator for acids and/or bases. This is because red cabbage juice turns pink if something is acidic, and green if something is basic.

    Any Recipes for Cabbage Rolls?

I love cabbage rolls, I may make them for dinner tonight as well:)

Here are some nice ones that I have either used or found helpful:

    1 large head of cabbage

1 to 1/2 pounds lean ground beef

1/2 cup instant rice or cooked rice

    1/2 teaspoon salt

    1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper

    1 egg, lightly beaten

    1/2 cup finely chopped onion

1/2 to 1 teaspoon cinnamon, divided (more or less, to taste)

1 can (10 1/2 ounces) tomato soup, undiluted

    1 can (14.5 ounces) tomatoes

    PREPARATION:

Tear the leaves off the cabbage and cook in boiling water or steam until wilted enough to be flexible. Cool. Mix ground beef, rice, egg, onion, and salt, pepper, and 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon together. Form a few tablespoons of the mixture into a cylinder, then roll up in a cabbage leaf. Secure rolls with toothpicks. Combine the soup and tomatoes in a Dutch oven. Place cabbage rolls in the Dutch oven. Sprinkle with about 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon. Cover and simmer for 1 1/2 to 2 hours.

    Serves 6.

    Reply:Ground Beef

    Ground Pork

    Cooked Rice (cooled)

    Onion (diced)

    Celery (diced)

    Salt

    Pepper

Cabbage leaves (core the cabbage head - gently pull leaves apart - blanch in hot water until softened)

Combine all ingredients except cabbage - starting at widest portion of cabbage place some of the meat mixture centered at the widest part - roll cabbage leaf just to cover meat - fold in edges of cabbage leaf and continue to roll into a packet. Place in oven proof pan (they can be touching each other). Now you can either use just water (just enough to cover rolls half way up) or crushed tomato with enough water to go half way up the rolls. Cover with foil nd bake at 350 Degree F for approx 45 minutes.
Reply:Others have given you okay options, but do NOT use minute rice. Only use short grain rice, slightly undercooked. I add sauteed onions and butter to the cooked rice, then cool the mixture.

Core the head of cabbage, get water boiling in a huge pot - then steam the cabbage, removing leaves as they soften.

What works AWESOME is to cool the leaves, then pile them in plastic bags and freeze them, even overnight. Then they are soft and pliable to roll.

Layer cabbage rolls in foil-lined roaster, fairly close together, alternating directions of layers (I do diagonals, because they come out easier later). Depending upon how many you make, I pour on tomato soup mixed with water, or tomato juice. Cover top with foil, then roaster cover.

Bake at 300 for hours and hours until softened. Check every hour, then half hour, to see if you need to add liquid.

Significance of eating corned beef, potatoes and cabbage on St. Patrick's Day?
Potatoes, cabbage, and boiled bacon were cheap but wholesome ingredients, easily obtainable, which provided the calories needed by a working person. Thus, the meal became a staple diet of the Irish working class. It is still popular today.

The corned beef must have replaced the bacon bit in some places because it is easier to obtain, probably even cheaper, and easier to keep and prepare.

But the meal is cheap, quick to prepare, and contains much goodness.
Reply:No, silly, it's not like Passover where the meal has symbolic significance. It's just traditional foods, to remind us of what our ancestors ate. I personally like to celebrate with Shamrock shakes from McDonald's (I'm too lazy to cook corned beef!).
    Reply:They are traditional Irish dishes.
Reply:It has nothing to do with St. Patric; it's just the preferred Irish meal.
Reply:Eating corn beef and cabbage started when the Irish moved to America and they couldn't find Irish bacon, but they found corn beef at there local Jewish shop. It was cheaper and easier to come by.
Reply:It was originally bacon potatoes and cabbage and the early settlers to America were looking for a substitute and found corned beef brisket to be a good alternative and cheap. Their is no real big significance of eating it st pats day it's just a traditional irish meal.
Reply:Corned beef, cabbage and potatoes is considered a typical Irish dish and St Patrick is he patron saint of Ireland.

Is cabbage and lettuce poison to a peach front concur?
Most veggies and fruits are safe for birds to eat. The only foods you should not feed your pet bird are chocolate, avocado, alcoholic beverages and caffeinated beverages. High fat and salty foods should also be avoided. I have personally fed my conure lettuce and had no adverse effects.
Reply:I never heard of that one but I do know that avocados are deadly for pet birds. I have a brown headed parrot that eats cabbage and lettuce so it is news to me. There are many good websites explaining what and what not to feed pet birds. Good Luck!

Use about 12 cups of water (or 8 cups and the V8 juice), cover and put heat on low. Let soup cook for a long time - two hours works well. Season to taste with salt and pepper.
    Reply:this is the easiest one.

    boil water in a pan

add canned corn ( cream style) and salt and pepper and soup stock.

add chicken and spinach or whatever you like.

    courtesy of Sara Moulton

    Yield: 4 to 6 servings

    3 tablespoons olive oil

    1 large onion, chopped

    2 garlic cloves, minced

1 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes

    1/4 cup balsamic vinegar

    2 tablespoons brown sugar

6 cups finely sliced red cabbage

1 cup chopped and drained plum tomatoes from a can

    6 cups chicken stock

Salt and freshly ground black pepper

1/4 cup finely chopped fresh parsley

Sour cream and finely chopped fresh chives, as accompaniments

In a large heavy pot heat olive oil over moderate heat and cook the onions until translucent. Add the minced garlic and crushed red pepper flakes and cook, stirring, for 1 minute. Stir in the balsamic vinegar and the brown sugar and bring to a simmer. Add the cabbage and stir to combine. Add the tomatoes and the chicken stock and bring to a simmer. Season with salt and pepper, to taste. Simmer the soup, uncovered, for 30 to 40 minutes until the cabbage is very tender. Taste soup and adjust seasoning with more balsamic vinegar, brown sugar, salt and/or pepper. Stir in parsley. Serve hot with a dollop of sour cream and chives.

Would you try spagetthi with cabbage rolls?

No. Try boiling up some wide egg noodles instead of spaghetti for a side dish to go with the cabbage rolls...you could also put some caraway seeds on the noodles and add a little of sour cream as desired...yummy.
Would you try spagetthi with cabbage rolls?
it's starch like mashed potatoes. wouldn't use tomato sauce, maybe pesto or just olive oil

What is the size of a grown dwarf hamster? Is it ok for dwarf hamsters to eat shredded cabbage?

and something i wanna ask too. My dwarf hammie is getting a little too fat since she's eating LOTs of sunflower seeds. Anyway to make her lose weight? She is maybe only 2 to 3 months old and she is like a full grown hamster? help plzzz
What is the size of a grown dwarf hamster? Is it ok for dwarf hamsters to eat shredded cabbage?
MODERATION That is the word of the day. Sunflower seeds are OK - in moderation. Cabbage is OK - in moderation. Though dark colored lettuce is better. Iceberg is a definite no-no since is has no nutritional value and is only water and fiber. Unfortunately most rodents look on iceberg lettuce like candy. Most commercial food mixes contain sunflower seeds along with other seeds and pellets for a nutritionally balanced hamster diet. Supplemented with occasional treats of fresh fruits and vegetables will be good for any hamster. But you need to work the fresh stuff in gradually so as not to upset her stomach.

Reply:its alright foor it to eat
Reply:if she looks overweight to you, she probably is.

just cut back a little on how much food is in her dish and make sure she gets plenty of excercise.

sunflower seeds tend to make them get fat pretty quick, too.
Reply:If you think she is overweight, then she probably is. All you really can do is control how much she eats. Just give her less than what she usually gets, it shouldn't take too long before she is back to a normal weight. Yes, they can have cabbage, it is really good for them.
Reply:well you should buy dietary food for it your can get it at your local pet store and you should buy a hamster wheel for it to exercise on plus it is one of the hamsters favorite toy
Reply:dwarf hamsters will NEVER get the size of a normal hampster...and yes they can eat cabbage

you must have gotten a regular hamster, because dwarf hamsters only get two inches long

just make sure you have a wheel for it, they have high matabolisms so they usually don't get fat

Do u no what swamp cabbage stew is?

It is a cabbage stew that it made with a special type of cabbage called "swamp". It is the heart of a cabbage palm, which is the official tree of Florida. Can also be called a palmetto palm or a sabal palm.

This is a recipe that was given to me:

    UNCLE WILLIE'S SWAMP CABBAGE STEW

    1 med. swamp cabbage

    3 pieces fatback

    2 cans of tomato

    Pinch of thyme

    2 lg. onions, chopped

    1 tsp. white sugar

1 pod of hot green pepper, chopped up

Fry fatback, onions, and chopped swamp cabbage until starting to brown. Add tomatoes, sugar, pepper, and thyme. Simmer until it thickens and tomatoes cook down. Add another pinch of thyme 10 minutes before it's done. Serve on rice. If you don't live along the Carolina, Georgia, North Florida coast, Hearts of Palm in a can will work. But don't cook them too long.

I parch my cabbage by dipping the leaf in boiling water, then I lay it on the cutting board. put some stuffing closer to one side than the other in a row, tuck up one end then roll it up.

    goodluck
Reply:You have to boil the cabbage first to make is pliable. Then you fol the top down then the bottom up then each sides in and stick a toothpick through it.
Reply:what the hell is a baba?
Reply:Please, if you find out will you tell me to?Please!!!!!!! I love those things.e-mail me at nor.1953@yahoo.com Please!!!!
    Reply:The main points are to

    1. take the leaves and cut away most of the stalk to make it thinner - so that where the stalk WAS there is only a thin bit left - almost as thin as the cabbage leaf surrounding it.

    2. boil the leaves until they're a bit soft. Otherwise you can't wrap them around anything..!

After doing that it should be easier, even if they're not the same as your baba's - whoever that is!
Reply:Parboil the cabbage for a few minutes to make the leaves tender and pliable enough to roll.

Do You Know What Little Cabbage Flowers On A Stalk Are Called?

The deli, a few blocks from my apartment, was selling these 'flowers'. They looked like little cabbages on stalks. Some were purple and others were pale green. The owner couldn't tell me their name. Do you know?
Do You Know What Little Cabbage Flowers On A Stalk Are Called?
    Hi,

They're known as Flowering Kales or as Ornamental Cabbage.

I think that you are looking for the "Dwarf" variety.

this flower is often used in contempory floral design.

I love this flower and have used it when in season in my arrangements.

In gardens and container gardening you will find the larger specimens.

On the next site you will see an example, it is # MFL-100

Reply:Proteas might make you think of cabbages before they open. They have large bracts layered like scales enclosing the florets.

The rest are blue flowers and smething I just threw in for no reason in particular.
Reply:Yeah, it really sounds like brussel sprouts. In which case they are not "flowers." They are buds. Usually they are not sold on the stalk. Brassica oleracea is the scientific name and it should be noted that brussel sprouts, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, mustard, cale, and kohlrabi are all this same species. In each case, a different part of the plant was selected for: the flowers for broccoli and cauliflower; the leaves for kale, etc. A testament to the wonders of Artificial selection.
