For good luck throughout the year.

Reply:Usually these customs are regional or cultural. I've never heard of yours, but it sounds like a Southern custom originating from another country, possibly in Africa.

Reply:Its to bring good luck the rest of the year.It doesn't work.
Reply:For good luck. Actually, we eat black-eyed peas with ham, I don't know anything about cabbage (yuuuck).

i don't know where this came from. i just know that it's a superstition and it's what my family tells me. traditionally, if you will. i'm not sure if it's just a black thing or a country thing. i'm both (black AND country) and i don't get down with blackeyes peas or cabbage at any time of the year.

another weird new year's superstitions: not washing clothes on new years day (wash a person out of the family - death)
