What's the best accompanying dish to eat with cabbage rolls? Rice? Pasta? With what sauce?

Our ukranian tradition for cabbage rolls involved layering them with heavy smoked bacon and sauerkraut, no tomato sauce; they are rice, so I can't see putting more rice with them. The sauerkraut juice and bacon fat dripped down thru the rolls, and a tight lid helped them to steam, as well as the extra cabbage leaves in the bottom of the pan. If neede, one added some water at the half way point.

We served them either as part of a massive feast with roasts, perogies, salads, etc, or they were the supper themselves, alone, because they sort of incorporate everything, like a one dish meal.

If I had to put something with them, I guess coleslaw salad, something like that, where the taste compliments the cabbage in the rolls, not fights it...

we make our cabbage rolls cooked with tomatoes and sauerkraut. sometimes we serve them with hot buttered mashed potatoes

Reply:Cabbage rolls usually have rice in the filling. Mashed potatoes are nice, but I'd opt for potato pierogi. You can buy them frozen at most supermarkets. Mrs. T's is one brand. They are similar to a potato filled ravioli. Boil them, then lightly brown in a bit of butter . Serve with sauteed onions and a dollop of sour cream. Mmmmm.
