I'm eating a pound and a half of raw green cabbage everyday, is this okay for my health?

Hello everyone,

Is it okay to consume more than a pound of cabbage everyday? Besides the obvious risks of pesticide exposure from the cabbage, which is surprisingly low in pesticide residues -- just visit www.foodnews.org to find out where it scores, is there any risk that could stem from eating so much raw cabbage?

As far as cooking goes, is it okay to lightly boil cabbage before consumption, to maximize absorption of vitamins and minerals?

Thanks!

Wow. You must be gassy.
Reply:I enjoy taking cabbage but always end up with a bloated stomach. It may not be beneficial to feed on cabbage alone to get all nutrients.

Prepare cabbage soup and you can have all the goodness. You can try to stir-fry it with garlic too.
Reply:You can steam cook too. It is healthy and will not lose its

nutrition values.
Reply:No it s not okay to consume that amount of any individual food . Your body is designed to deal with a variety of foods and too much of any one food really s not good for you. There are a number of key issues here. Cabbage while a nutritrious food does not contain all the require nutrients. Cabbage is quite bulky so it will supress your appetite again making it hard for you to get a balanced diet. I would start cutting back on the cabbage now, and start eating a variety of foods , besides being bettre for you its also more appetizing. While exposure to pesticides is a concern the damage you are doing by not eating a balanced diet will have much worse long term effects
Reply:I would say that rather than eating so much cabbage, why don't you try other vegetables and some fruit? You can lightly steam your vegetables, as boiling does take away quite a bit of the nutritional value, and this makes their digestion somewhat easier. Try making a stir fry to include lots of vegetables, or have a portion of cabbage, some broccoli, some cauliflower, and some carrots.
Reply:Cabbage is not bad by itselve. But too much on anything is bad, You also need other vitamins, minerals, fats, and proteins.
Reply:Not good for you. There is nothing wrong with cabbage per se, but you cannot eat that much of the stuff without neglecting other foods necessary to a balanced diet. As for cooking it, go ahead, and use the cooking water for food somehow as it will have some of the vitamins and minerals leached out during the cooking process.
Reply:The raw has more vitamin content than the cooked. Just be sure to not get too full of cabbage that you do not eat other foods that you need for a balanced diet. Also be careful that you don't blow up!!!! You must be ripe.
Reply:Eating any type of food in such large quantities may have some type of nutritional drawback. If you are only eating more than a pound cabbage a day then you may have serious problems nutrition wise. Also lightly boiling any type of vegetable will leach vitamins and minerals from the vegetable into the water you are boiling it in and will not increase absorption of nutrients. Steaming is your best bet when cooking vegetables. Even steaming will leach some nutrients from the vegetable. My concern is the obvious problems you may have with gas and bloating (two major cabbage symptoms). All things in moderation are good for you. That should be your rule of thumb on any diet. This includes calorie intake. Too much of a good thing always turns out bad in the long run.
Reply:wow, the fumes must be incredible!
Reply:Definitely okay to lightly boil the cabbage. And you can eat as much as you can stand. I bet you're going to the bathroom like crazy.
