What do they mean when cabbage patch dolls are "born"?

Often when refering to cabbage patch dolls they say that they are "born" but they're just dolls.
What do they mean when cabbage patch dolls are "born"?
I will assume that you do not have little girls or otherwise know any, nor have you ever been one.

Little girls often like to play house and want "babies" for Christmases and birthdays. By "babies" they mean baby dolls. Little girls often like to play "mommy" or "house". Getting a baby doll that is born and has a birth certificate and a name make the fun of playing house that much more fun. When the birth certificate on a Cabbage Patch doll says "birth date" or "born" it is often the date or approximate date of manufacture.
Reply:My sister had one of those dolls. I picked on her for it. But anyhow; The cabbage patch doll is "BORN" when the owner of the doll opens the package the doll comes in. At that moment, you are suppose to fill out the "BIRTH CERTIFICATE" with the date and time and thier name when you opened to box. And that is when they are born.
Reply:they get a birht certificate and they mommy gets to take care of them lik they do at the hospital
Reply:Apparently, you have no imagination! What a shame!
Reply:Yup, you're right, but to the incredibly gullible, the marketing angle lets them see them as being "more than dolls".

Terribly sad but true.
