What is the significance of eating black-eyed peas and cabbage for New Year's?
Eating black-eyed peas is from the south. As far as the cabbage, not sure, wasn't taught that one at home. We always had black-eyed peas for New Years dinner, no matter what else was served. It is for good luck through the new year.
Reply:I wouldn't want to be too near anyone who ate that combination. Phew! Methane.....
Reply:It's to build up plenty of gas so that you can.. heh heh... start off the New Year with a blast!
Reply:I didnt know about this tradition untill I moved to georgia. They are both for money, black eyed peas are for pennies, and cabbage or collards are for the green money.
Reply:there is no significance, just get yourself a life
Reply:Same reason you cook pork and sauerkraut with a penny or nail in it. Luck is the only reason. Probably an old wives tale.
