When did mattel start to distribute cabbage patch kids?

When did mattel start to distribute cabbage patch kids?
I remember them in in 1984.

In 1976, Xavier Roberts invented 'Little Person' dolls, the first Cabbage Patch Kids. Roberts was a teenager when he started the Babyland General Hospital in Cleveland, Georgia, where people could adopt a baby (the hand sewn dolls were never called dolls) complete with adoption papers. Roberts and five friends started the Original Appalachian Artworks company to produce the dolls. The Coleco toy company liked Roberts' ideas and began mass-marketing the dolls in 1983, under the new name of 'Cabbage Patch Kids.'
Reply:I bought one for my son for Christmas of 1982; they'd been around maybe a year at that point, although I know their inventor had been selling them boutique-style for a few years before that.
Reply:Cabbage Patch Kids were Coleco toys in the 1980s. When Coleco died, I suppose Mattel picked up the slack. Check out ColecoVision and the Adam (cassette-drive computer) as well under failed game/PC platforms. ColecoVision actually outperformed Atari 2600 (they made the 5200 to "catch up).
Reply:1982... is when they started selling them too the public ...

How much wieght can a person lose if they were on "The Cabbage Diet" for one month? Trying to lose 15lbs.

They reckon up to 10lbs in one week, then you should wait two weeks before doing it again. The idea seems to be to 'fool' your metabolism into burning calories by switching between one energy source and another:

What other vegetables can they eat?
Is it OK to feed cabbage to a guinea pig?
You can, but there's better and more nutritious veggies to feed them. Cabbage is mostly water and doesn't contain a lot of nutrients. What type of cabbage also makes a difference.

The other problem with cabbage is it's a very gassy food. You want to limit how much they get or they get bloated from too much gassy food - and they're not comfortable or happy when they're bloated.
Reply:Feeding cabbage to a guines pig would be pretty pointless seeing as how it is very much like iceburg lettuce (which is nearly ALL water). I would feed a guinea pig Romaine Lettuce, Shredded carrots, Oranges, Spinach Leaves, and other things of the sort.
Reply:I agree with most of the folks on here. I don't feed it to mine because I don't want to chance them getting a tummy ache from gas or other problems, but they get spoiled with lots of timothy hay, fresh fruits, melons, and green veggies as well as some chemical free grass grown especially for them.
Reply:This is what I feed mine:

    Broccoli

    Brussels Sprouts

    Bell Peppers

Red Cabbage Swiss Chard, Red Chard

His favorite are parsley and broccoli
Reply:of course u can feed it alfalfa,grass,cabbage,spinach,lettuce,ba... strawberry
Reply:i woudl stay away from the cabbage and use kale its much better for them
Reply:lots they can eat cabage too, they can eat most fruits too
Reply:i got four guineapigs and its ok
Reply:Yes, it's ok to feed cabbage to your guinea pig! I occasionally feed very small amounts to mine but it does tend to make my piggies flatulant (= gassy), so they fart!

I have noticed that each piggie (just like us!) has their personal preference on what is their favorite veggie. I have one who adores baby carrots even over romaine and 2 who love tomatoes and parsley equally. The last pig will eat ANYTHING!

Anyhow, here is what Guinea Lynx has to say about cabbage and other vegetables for your piggies:

    Every cavy needs daily:

    Vitamin C

    Fresh Water

    Quality Pellets

    Unlimited Grass Hay

    Fresh Vegetables

    What People Say

What do people really feed their guinea pigs? It's different for everyone and depends on what is in season, whether you are interested in foraging for greens, and what you think is good for your guinea pig, not to mention what your pig is willing to eat. Every pig is different: some have medical conditions requiring special diets. A few pigs don't like cabbage or cilantro. Others hate tomatoes (a staple in my home). Who knows what will turn your pig's head? Whatever you offer your cavies, introduce foods slowly, offer a variety, and be sure to provide unlimited high quality hay and plain pellets.

The lists in the diet section provide nutritional content for a variety of vegetables and fruits. But not all foods are equal, nor should all be fed in unlimited quantities. Here are a few commonly held opinions:

Variety, variety, variety -- modest amounts of a variety of vegs (and a few fruits) are best

    Feed primarily green leafy vegetables

Fruits should be only a small part of the diet

Don't give too many carrots -- at most, only a small carrot every other day or so

Avoid or severely limit cruciferous vegetables like cabbage, broccoli, Brussels sprouts and cauliflower as they may cause gas

Cut up celery in small pieces so the strings don't cause problems

Iceberg lettuce is best not offered guinea pigs; it is low in nutrients and according to some people, could cause loose stools if given in excess

    Avoid starchy vegetables like potatoes

Do not feed potato skins and eyes -- they can be very high in oxalic acid

    Author's Veg List

Here is a sample of the vegetables and fruits the author provides each of her guinea pigs daily, along with unlimited high quality hay and plain pellets:

Grass, between a handful to several handfuls, more in the warmer months

Green pepper, 1/8 to 1/4 of whole pepper

Romaine lettuce, one or two large leaves, sometimes more

Tomato, wedge of large tomato or small Roma tomato

    Carrot (baby), one small

    Occasional vegetables:

--- Broccoli leaves (tiny) and peeled broccoli stem

--- Chinese Cabbage (pak-choi), one leaf

--- Corn silks and husks when in season

--- Parsley, one or more sprigs

--- Forages like chickweed, dandelions, and young clover

Fruit (a couple fruits per day from this list):

--- Apple, thin wedge, no seeds

    --- Apricot, dried, a couple raisin-sized pieces

    --- Banana, 1/4" round slice

    --- Blueberries, several

    --- Cantaloupe, 1"X 2"piece with washed rind

--- Grapes or Raisins (not both), one or two

    --- Orange, one slice

    --- Strawberries

    --- Watermelon, 1" X 2" piece with washed rind

You may not be able to add forages to your pigs diet, but they are a welcome addition for those of us who can. Grass is a major part of my pigs' diet, especially in spring and fall when it is most plentiful and tasty. I try to provide some grass every day but take a break when there is snow cover. Chickweed, young clover, young plantain and especially dandelion (another favorite) are other popular forages, especially welcome when young and tender. See Forages for more information on how to find nutritious weeds and grasses.

Remember: Don't feed anything you wouldn't eat yourself (i.e. no spoiled food) and rinse food thoroughly.

And if you choose to provide grass or other forages, avoid areas next to busy roadsides or those frequented by dogs or livestock. Select clean, pesticide-free plants that show no signs of mildew or disease -- the younger, the better.

Good luck and have fun with your piggie!
Reply:A good guinea pig diet might include carrots, lettuce, apples, and sometimes some parsley or other fresh fruits and vegetables. Most fresh fruits and veggies from your kitchen are good to feed your guinea pig. Something NOT good to give your guinea pig is potato peelings or anything with potatoes in them. Potatoes poison guinea pigs and will kill them, so don’t feed your guinea pigs any potatoes! Raw beans and iceberg lettuce are also NOT good foods to give your guinea pig. Guinea pigs like to chomp down on hay and dried pellets. You can put some hay in one corner of your cage and some pellets in a food bowl in another corner of the cage. Make sure that your guinea pig gets enough water. At most pet stores you can get water bottles for guinea pigs and other rodents, too.

Here's a rundown of guinea pig food...

? Good foods for guinea pigs to eat are: apples, bananas, pears, strawberries, grapefruit, honeydew melon, kiwis, tangerines, yellow plums, oranges, watermelon, grapes, lemons, cauliflower leaves, broccoli, turnips, peppers, parsley, red beets, cucumbers, celery, spinach, tomatoes, and zucchini.

? Bad foods for guinea pigs to eat are: Iceberg lettuce, all varieties of green cabbage, chinese cabbage, cauliflower, and red cabbage.

? Poisonous foods for guinea pigs to eat are: Potato peelings and raw beans. As for the actual potato, there has been some confusion about whether they are or aren't poisonous to guinea pigs. To be on the safe side, I would suggest not feeding your guinea pig potatoes. For a more comlete list of plants that are poisonous to guinea pigs, visit the Poisonous Foods page.

? Hay is another good food for guinea pigs. It is the basic food for guinea pigs. If you feed them hay along with water, it is suitable for the winter! This is only if no fresh veggies or fruits are available.

? You can gather plants from outside to give to guinea pigs. They absolutely love outdoor greens! Just make sure that there are no flowers or dried tree leaves in the bundle you pick. If there are any leaves or flowers in it, cut them out and give only the plant leaves and stalks to your guinea pig. Grass is also considered a treat to guinea pigs! If you do decide to collect outdoor plants, do not get them if they grow near roads or sidewalks, or have been treated with pesticides!

? Toilet paper tubes and paper towel tubes are completely fine for guinea pigs to eat. It gives them something to chew on to help their teeth, as well as something to play with. It is also like an in-between meal for them, when they aren’t eating anything else.

? Pellets are a part of a regular guinea pig diet. They have some vitamins and minerals added, so they are really healthy. Guinea pigs don’t consider them a treat unless there are extra dried fruits or nuts added to them.

? Salt and mineral wheels are optional. Salt wheels are exactly what they are called. It is salt formed into the shape of a wheel that can be attached to the cage. Then the guinea pig can chew on it anytime it feels like it! The mineral wheel is a mix of minerals and salt. It is usually a reddish color, unlike the salt wheel that is always white.

? Vitamin C is very important to guinea pigs! They can get this from fresh fruits. Oranges have a particular big amount of Vitamin C. Vitamin C helps fight infections in guinea pigs, as well as to heal wounds. It also helps break down and metabolize proteins in the guinea pig's diet.

? Clean and fresh water is necessary for guinea pigs to live. It is pretty much necessary for any living thing on Earth! Change the water whenever needed, preferably once every two-three days.

? The entire digestive tract of a guinea pig is about 2.3 meters long.

? These materials are needed for a guinea pigs' survival: Vitamins, minerals, carbohydrate, fats, proteins, and of course, water!

? These vitamins are needed for a guinea pig to survive: Vitamin A, Vitamin B12, Thiamine, Riboflavin, Vitamin D, Vitamin E, and Vitamin K.

? These minerals are needed for a guinea pig to survive: Calcium, Copper, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorous, Potassium, and Sodium.

? Guinea pigs are not able to store water for a long period of time, and that is why it is necessary to replenish their water any time the water bottle gets low. Every cell needs the water, so guinea pigs have to drink almost constantly.

? Guinea pigs are also able to eat dirt. This may sound funny, but it is true. Dirt has vitamins and minerals and nutrients that guinea pigs need, and apparently, they seem to like it!

? Guinea pigs will occasionally eat their own feces (poops). The feces still contain some leftover nutrients, and so the guinea pigs eat them. This is sort of a way of recycling. It will not hurt them, and it will actually help them live, because of the materials within them.

Did anybody ever try the cabbage soup diet? does it really work? if so, how much weight did you lose and how

long did it take you to lose the weight. i looked at the websites on how to make it but i want to know if it really works and how well it does if so. if anybody tried it, please tell me if it works and what you got out of it. thank you all in advance!
Did anybody ever try the cabbage soup diet? does it really work? if so, how much weight did you lose and how
I tried it with a friend the first time and we both lost weight. I've used it several times over the years to get back in shape when I've kind of let myself go. It's an easy diet to lose 10 - 15 pounds, but it's usually quickly so you have to be careful to eat properly after coming off the diet. Don't stay on it more than 7 days at a time which is how long you're supposed to stay on it and be sure to eat exactly what you're supposed to on the diet or you'll be very hungry. I have to admit I felt very hungry for the first couple of days. Stomach shrinking?

There's a lot of stuff about this diet being new, but it's been around for years. I tried it the first time about 8 years ago.

There was one side-effect both my friend and I had from the diet that was rather unpleasant...diarrhea. Since the diet is more like a purging of impurities, I guess it works in more way than one.

This was also the same diet a friend of mine's Dad was put on before he had some tests run having to do with his heart. I don't know why, but it was the same diet.

    Ham hocks and cabbage?

Has anyone ever made smoked hocks and cabbage, I want to make some for dinner but don't know how long to cook.

    Please Help?

Do I cook them at the same time or seperate. I've heard that cabbage only takes a few minutes to cook, but my sister cooks hers for an hour. Anybody else do this?
    Ham hocks and cabbage?
Your sister is doing it right. Smoked ham hocks are fully cooked, so you don't have to let it stew for hours and hours. I'd put the ham hocks in boiling water for half an hour and then add the cabbage for the last hour of cooking.

Mmm, that sounds good! Mind if I come over to your place for dinner? I'll bring some potatoes to roast...
Reply:yes listen to sis they will give you good broth and fall off the bone. are we gonna have some fried tatters and biscuits ? be there soon Ill bring dessert
Reply:I like to cook the ham for a little bit by itself then turn the heat down, add the cabbage and cook over very low heat for several hours. This gives it a really good smoky flavor, and the flavors are melded together very well. Add plenty of salt and pepper too :)
Reply:This is a good one and should answer all your questions.

    Cabbage and Ham Hock Gumbo

    Ingredients

    1 cup vegetable oil

    1 cup flour

    1 1/2 cups chopped onions

    1 cup chopped celery

    1 cup chopped bell peppers

    4 cups Savoy cabbage, julienned

    2 pounds smoked ham hocks

    1 1/2 teaspoons salt

    1/4 teaspoon cayenne

    3 bay leaves

    7 cups chicken stock

    2 tablespoons chopped parsley

    1/2 cup chopped green onions

    1 tablespoon file powder

    2 cups cooked white rice

    Directions

Combine the oil and flour in a large cast-iron or enameled cast-iron

Dutch oven, over medium heat. Stirring slowly and constantly for 20 to 25 minutes, make a dark brown

roux, the color of chocolate. Add the onions, celery, and bell peppers and continue to stir for 4 to

5 minutes, or until wilted. Add the cabbage and continue to saute for 2 minutes. Add the ham hocks,

salt, cayenne, and bay leaves. Continue to stir for 3 to 4 minutes. Add the stock. Stir

until the roux mixture and stock are well combined. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to medium to

low. Cook, uncovered, stirring occasionally, for 2 1/2 hours. Skim off any fat that rises to the

surface. Continue to simmer for 30 minutes. Remove from the heat . Stir in the parsley, green

onions, and file powder. Remove the bay leaves and ham hocks. Shred the meat from the hocks and

place the meat back into the gumbo. Serve in deep bowls with the rice.

1 lg. onion, halved %26amp; sliced thin

    1 lb. great northern beans

    1 sm. head cabbage, 1 1/2 lbs.

4 med. size potatoes, peeled %26amp; cut

6 med. sized carrots, cut in 2" pieces

    2 tsp. salt

    1/8 tsp. pepper

    1/4 c. chopped fresh parsley

In large Dutch oven cover and bring to boil ham hocks, water and onion. Reduce heat and simmer 45 minutes. Bring liquid to a boil again and add beans slowly, cover and reduce heat to simmer for 1 1/2 to 2 hours. Add more water if necessary. Cut cabbage into thin wedges 1" thick, leaving just enough of core to hold wedge together. Stir potatoes, carrots, salt and pepper into beans and lay cabbage wedges on top. Cover and cook 30 minutes longer until vegetables are tender. Remove cabbage, stir in parsley. Taste and add more seasonings if desired.

s one.... taste great and my family loves it.
Reply:Ham hocks should cook for 4 to 6 hours. Cabbage, however, only needs 15 to 20 minutes.

If you cook the ham hocks for 5 hours, with parsley, celery seeds, bay leaf, black pepper and seasoned salt, and then when the liquid is mostly gone add cabbage that has been cut into pieces, you can mostly steam the cabbage for 15-30 minutes and it will absorb all the flavorful liquid from the ham hocks.

    This will be delicious.

Anything involving huge amounts of water and cabbage and cooking the cabbage until it turns into wilted, wrinkled goo won't taste so good or give good mouthfeel.
Reply:Either way will work, I cook mine at the same time; but others will tell you to cook them seperate. IF you cook them at the same time, all the fat from the meat will get into the cabbage. It taste good, but isn't very good for you. I use smoked Turkey, it still gives it a good flavor without as much fat.......
Reply:I've never specifically made cabbage with hocks before but I've used them for all kinds of soups and bean recipes. They pretty much always boil about an hour before adding other ingredients... as the dog sits and anxiously awaits the bone. After the hock has boiled an hour-- add the cabbage for 20 minutes or so. I think they'd be mush after an hour.
Reply:I'm not sure if it's the same, but I make boiled dinners. I take my ham, cabbage, potatoes, carrots and turnip in my stock pot and just let it cook low for all day. The longer it cooks, the better the flavor. Enjoy!
Reply:hey im from the deep south and thats definately a southern favorite. the hocks take longer because you have to let them get tender in order to eat them. cook the hocks for about an hour and a half . make sure the water is boiled down to about and inch and a half . wash and cut your cabbage . turn the heat on low . put the cabbage in and put a lid on . let them steam for 20 minutes . remember to let them steam. salt to taste because remember the hocks are smoked. enjoy.
Reply:Cook the hocks separate, then add the cabbage later
Reply:What I like to do is at around 7 or 8 am in the mourning, I put about 4 heads of cabbage in the crock pot with the ham-hocks. I like to mix chicken broth with the water and fill to the top leaving about 1inch of space, and then put on low and cook about 6-8hrs. Or if I am cooking it on high for about 4hrs.

Add butter, moistened bread, cream, and cheese. Pour half of the mixture into a lightly buttered casserole. Top with half the seasoned crumbs. Pour the remaining mixture into the casserole; top with remaining seasoned crumbs. Bake at 350 degrees until browned, about 25 to 30 minutes.

    Serves 4 to 6.

Easy Corned Beef and Cabbage Recipe courtesy Paula Deen

    Recipe Summary

    Difficulty: Easy

    Prep Time: 30 minutes

    Cook Time: 12 minutes

Yield: 4 to 6 servings (If serving 6, use 2 cans corned beef)

    User Rating:

    4 slices bacon

    4 tablespoons butter

1 head green cabbage, coarsely chopped

Salt and freshly ground pepper, to taste

    1 can corned beef

Cook the bacon in large pot over medium heat until almost crisp. Remove the bacon from the pot and set aside. Melt the butter in the pot with the bacon grease. Add the cabbage, stirring well to coat the cabbage in fat. Add about 1/3 cup water, and salt and pepper, to taste. Cover pot with a lid, and cook over medium heat for about 10-15 minutes. Meanwhile, chop the bacon into small pieces.

Remove the lid from the pot, and scatter chunks of corned beef and chopped bacon over top of the cabbage. Cover and cook until desired doneness. I personally like a little bit of crunch left to the cabbage.

Tip: Cabbage is one of those vegetables that naturally contains water in its leaves. Begin by adding just a small amount of water. As cabbage cooks, if it needs more liquid, then add more water.

  • Does any one have a recipe for stuffed cabbage rolls with beer and sauerkraut in it?

Sorry, I didn't find one with Beer in it too, but you could add it in place of the water.

    INGREDIENTS

    1 pound ground beef

    1 pound ground pork

    1 onion, chopped

    1 teaspoon salt

    black pepper to taste

    1 teaspoon chopped fresh parsley

    1/2 cup cooked brown rice

    1 1/4 teaspoons garlic salt

2 (10.75 ounce) cans condensed tomato soup

    27 ounces sauerkraut, drained

1 (29 ounce) can diced tomatoes

    1 medium head cabbage

    5 slices bacon

    2 tablespoons white sugar

    3 cups water

    DIRECTIONS

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Bring a pot of water to a boil.

Mix beef and pork together. Stir in onion, cooked rice, parsley, salt, pepper, garlic salt and 1/2 can of tomato soup. Mix well.

Core head of cabbage, place in boiling water and boil until partly cooked. Separate leaves and trim stems. Reserve about 24 to 32 whole leaves. Cut remaining leaves and line the bottom of large roasting pan.

Lightly pack a small handful of the meat mixture and place in the center of a cabbage leaf. Fold top part of leaf over mixture, then fold in the sides and roll until mixture is completely encased. Lay rolls on top of torn cabbage leaves in pan. Place sauerkraut evenly over rolls. Lay bacon on top of sauerkraut. Sprinkle with 1 to 2 tablespoons of sugar. Mix chopped tomatoes and soup with water and pour over rolls. Add additional water to reach top of cabbage rolls.

Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 1 1/2 hours or until cooked through.

Did the Cabbage Patch Kids Dolls in the 80s all have different names?
Every Cabbage Patch Kid since Coleco started selling them around 1981 (now PlayAlong sells them) has had a different first name/middle name combination. That's why so many of today's CBKs have such unique names--a lot of the more common combinations were already used.

For example, I had a Kid named Davey Pete.

The Kid I just bought for my niece? Ryleigh Margaret!

    From USA Today:

    %26gt;%26gt;Each Cabbage Patch Kid comes with a birth certificate. "I used an old 1930s baby book to come up with the names," [Cabbage Patch Kid Creator Xavier Roberts] told me in a phone interview from his home in Atlanta. (Today, Play Along uses the Social Security register.) That helps explain why the names of my Kids never mirrored my friends': When was the last time you ran into an Elsa, Kendall or a Benny?%26gt;%26gt;
    Reply:Of course they did.
Reply:I believe they were all given unique names. I had one named Hazel (something or other)....they were all supposed to be like real children with different names.
Reply:I never heard of a friend who had a doll with the same name. Mine was Ardella Tilly. I think because they had middle names they could have so many combinations of name. That's a good question though. I wonder if there was a repeat somewhere? Only the maker would know for sure.

Can decorative cabbage - the ones that are purple, and, also white be eaten or are they just for decoration?
Yes, you can eat ornamental cabbage %26amp; kale, however, it is a little more "bitter" than its edible cultivar cousins (broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower). When it's cooked it will turn to a unappetizing gray color. Through the years of propagating an ornamental, colorfully leaved variety, most of the palatable flavor has been lost. Here is a link with some pics and info for you to chew on. Hope this answers your question.

Already growing and dont know anything on them as far as how much to water, fertilize and what kind and how much space is really required between them? Looks good so far.
Need to know how to grow cabbage, carrots and raddishes.?
to prepare the soil for transplant you should add the fertilizer to the soil and rotovate (mix together) about 1oz of fertilizer to a sq ft of soil-depending on the strength of fertilizer and grade of soil. Water soil preferably with a sprinkler system. (to prevent soil erosion(soil been washed away) and should be done twice a day depending on the weather(early morning and late afternoon. Will stunt the growth or killed if watered when the sun is hot. The minimum space between plants should be 12inches this is for cabbage and raddishes as carrots should not be transplanted. They should be sown on prepared soil. Try to minimize the amount of seeds been thrown too closely on soil.
Reply:Over watering is as bad as no water at all, if it rains then you don't need to water but if it's dry then water twice a week. Sprinkler a handful of Sulphate of Potash, just around the plants this should help, not to much just a light sprinkle. then water in. Cauliflower's are probably the hardest to grow, and here's THE TIP OF THE DAY, close up the leaves so the SUN does not get at the part inside. fasten them up with loose string or rubber bands, this will prevent the sun from ripening them to soon, when you want one, then open it about a week before you want to use it and they should be nice and crisp.

How do I make Corned Beef & Cabbage??

I bought the items, tell me the way to prepare and cook it... any tips would be helpful. Thank You
How do I make Corned Beef %26amp; Cabbage??
From scratch? Most of us don't get into the whole beef and brine stuff. Instead, we buy corned beef, cabbage, and such from the store. Throw it together and cook it until the cabbage is too soft and the beef reaches the bullet hard stage.

Canned cabbage tends to be good with brauts or hot dogs but stinks with corned beef. Corned beef and cabbage needs fresh cabbage from the produce department.

Might I suggest.... Sear the corned beef in a skillet to seal in the juices. Put it in a crock pot and cover it with naturally sweatened apple juice. Add 1/2 of the spice pack they supply with the corned beef and toss the rest. Turn it on low and let it cook for the better part of the day.

Skin and slice up some medium sweet cooking apples and put them in a sauce pan with some diced up (and rinsed) cabbage. Salt it lightly. Bring it to a boil and then cook it for 10 minutes or so. I just make sure the apples are cooked through. Pour off the water or remove it with a slotted spoon.

The corned beef will need to be removed carefully because it will be so soft that it will likely fall off of the meat forks when you try to remove it. I usually use two large slotted spoons. I put it on a cutting board and slice it into pieces an inch to an inch and a half thick.

Toss in some fresh baked sheep herder's bread and you're set. Some folks insist on adding Irish beer as a beverage. I find that overpowering for the adults and it cuts the kids out entirely. Iced tea or water works fine.
Reply:You're not serous, are you? I love it! LOL
Reply:I do mine in the crock pot, But I don't put the cabbage in at the same time as the meat or it gets cooked to death.
Reply:I always cook my corned beef in the oven. Place on a rack, fat side up, in a lage pan w/water on the bottom. Sprinkle some pickling spice on top. Cover w/foil and bake 350 for about 2 hours. Boiling water for your cabbage and carrots. Enjoy

Reply:try meals.com , usually you boil the corned beef for a long time , then when it starts to get tender add cabbage and carrots and potatoes if you like it that way
Reply:just heat it up, its already cooked
Reply:Take the corned beef and place it in a heavy stock pot or slow cooker. Cover it with cold water.

On the stove or slow cooker, keep it on low.

Add the spice packet, if one came with it

    On stove:

1 1/2 hours into cooking time, add chopped carrots, onions, potatoes and cabbage.

continue to cook (simmer) for another 1 1/2 - 2 hours.

In a slow cooker, it takes about 6-8 hours, so don't add veggies until about 1/2 way through.

Yes Simon B. The bread is flat and filled with either cabbage or potatoes and cheese.?
My (old name was Simon B) wife use the recipe since we meet each other at first time in Ukraine:

2 lb. cabbage, shredded in food processor

    2 tsp. salt

Toss together; let stand 15 minutes and drain off any excess water.

    1/2 c. green onions, sliced

    2 tbsp. cooking oil

    1/4 tsp. pepper

Cook with cabbage on medium heat 5 to 6 minutes.

    8 sheets phyllo dough, thawed

    1/2 c. bread crumbs

    1/2 c. butter, melted

Brush each sheet of phyllo with butter then sprinkle with bread crumbs. Prepare 4 sheets stacked on top of each other. Spoon 1/2 of cabbage mixture down long sides of phyllo sheets 4 inches from edges. Fold in sides and roll up. Place seam side down on greased pan. Brush all over with melted butter. Repeat the procedure for a second strudel.

Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes or until brown. Serve hot and cut into slices.

Reply:I'm not sure if you are allowed pearl barley soup mix for the cabbage soup diet but if you are then this the the veg soup I normally make. Bring a couple of handfulls of pearl barley soup mix to boil in veg stock and reduce to simmer. Add a bayleaf and bouquet garni for flavour.

Meanwhile, prepare and chop one leek, 3 carrots and 5 sticks of celery (i also like to use the leafy part of the celery as it is full of flavour). Add to the pot and cook until the veg are tender to your liking. Sprinkle with freshly chopped parsley before serving.

If you are not allowed pearl barley you could leave it out and use diced potato instead.

Reply:Onion soup is always good :)

Fry off onions with a pinch of sugar until a deep brown colour (not burnt but dark brown). Add to a point of onion stock (and a dash of brandy if you like that kind of thing) and keep the heat at just under boiling. Cover and leave for about 45 mins to infuse.

Meanwhile cut some french bread into slices, lay out on a baking tray, drizzle a little olive oil on each and bake at 180c for 20-25 mins. When done, take out and rub a slice of garlic clove all over the toast.

To serve, put soup in a heat proof bowl, lay the croutons (baked french bread) on top and throw over a generous handful of Gruyere cheese. Put under a hot grill until the cheese colours.

Watch when eating as the cheese can burn the mouth!

    Hope you like it :)

Find a vegetable or mix of vegetables you like and boil in a pan with a stock cube till cooked! Avoid any vegetable that breaks down quickly or cook them in larger sized pieces.

Live on it for more than a week and you'll lose weight and also any friends you might have, it's not just cabbage that causes nasty smelling wind! Live on it too long and you'll be suffering from lots of other problems too including malnutrition, as the human body is not designed to live on mainly liquid diets, and vegetables contain a lot of fibre which cannot be digested! As soon as you stop the diet you'll regain the weight and perhaps even gain more!

    To be slim %26gt;

Just learn to eat healthily and everything in moderation and exercise more and let your body find it's own weight level. Watch how naturally slim people eat. I've never dieted in my life and have weighed the same give or take a few pounds (apart from when pregnant and the increase was less than a stone and gone within a week of the births) since I was 16, I'm talking over 40 years!

I'm looking for a cabbage recipe which had red wine vinager in it.?
Sounds like a German dish. Vinegar is used to keep the cabbage red. The cabbage can be fried with bacon(or bacon grease), onion, caraway seed. Add sugar and red wine vinegar to form a sweet and sour coating to the cabbage. It goes well with sausage on a roll( Hot dog). It is best with a grilled Bratwurst and Course Ground Brown Bavarian Mustard. Das ist gut, nict var??

    3 Red Wine vinegar

    2 Red Wine,

    1 desertspoon Plain Flour

    1 Bay Leaf

    3 Cloves

    3 Juniper Berrier

A little Apple Juice (Cider also works)

    Method

Clean the Red Cabbage and cut finely. Peel and finely cut (very small cubes) the Onion and Apple.

In a (very) large pan melt the butter, add the onion, apple and sugar.

Cover on a low heat for 40-50 minutes (until well cooked)

Just before serving, add the flour mixed with a little water (or more apple, you can never have enough of the mixed taste) and add to the cabbage to thicken.

When serving, remove the Bayleaf,, Cloves and Juniper Berries.

This goes particularly well with Duck, Roast Pork and gravy etc.

    1 1/2 teaspoons salt

    1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper

Pour in another quart of water, and return to a slow boil. Add garlic and cabbage. Simmer for 25 minutes, until cabbage is tender. Ladle into soup bowls to serve.

Sometimes I add sour cream on top
Reply:I looked that up a while back. But cannot give a great recipe because we do not eat beef.

However cook the cabbage down with some onions and add about and eight of a cup of brown sugar. Start from their slice the whole head of cabbage and about two onions really thin. Add about 25 oz to start of beef broth or chicken. Then cook it down. Make sure you have some extra broth if you need it.

I usually do not follow recipes so this may sound choppy.

    HEEELP!!!!

I have just put my cabbage rolls in the oven, and my recipe called for uncooked rice, with cooking time of 1.5 hours.

In EVERY other recipe, I see that they use COOKED rice, and bake the same time.

Has this happened to anyone else? If so, did they turn out okay, or did you have to cook the rolls longer?

I assume that a longer cooking time is all that is needed, or do they come out okay anyway?
    Cabbage rolls using UNcooked rice?
Bake in a slow oven, 300 degrees F., for about 2 hours.
Reply:LONGER COOKING TIME IS NEEDED, MAKE SURE YOU ADD ENOUGH BROTH AND COVER AND COOK FOR ABOUT 40 MINUTES, NAMASTE
Reply:1.5 hours is plenty of time for the rice to cook. The only thing is that the uncooked rice is going to soak up alot of moisture so unless the dish has alot of liquid in it for the rice to absorb I think it will come out very dry. I would check it after 1 hour and make sure there is still some liquid for the rice to soak up and if not add some chicken broth.
Reply:Make sure there is plenty of liquid and it shoud turn out just fine.
Reply:That certainly wins the bad recipe of the month award,. What's done is done .What you need to do is make sure that that you have adequate liquid in the baking dish to properly cook the rice.

If it is not tightly cover and sealed w/ foil , it should be

Oven temp should be 300F. you need to go low %26amp; slow

I am amazed by how many potentially good cooks unknowingly get sabotaged by bad recipes.
Reply:You will have to trust the recipe is correct. But I can understand you being a bit doubtful. However, I think that with enough liquid, 1.5 hours would be enough for the rice to absorbe the liquid. Also, I can see where it would be an advantage if the recipe works as it should.

Too often when you cook the rice before hand it becomes "mushy". When I get the chance to make cabbage rolls I "partially cook" the rice.
Reply:um well if thats what it says just hope the person who wrote is right

The word is Polish but I can't believe a dish so sensible and delicious wasn't cooked all over that area. Ingredients

    1/2 cup instant brown rice

1 large head green cabbage (about 2 pounds)

1 15- to 16-ounce can black beans or red kidney beans, rinsed and drained

1/2 cup chopped onion (1 medium)

1 26- or 28-ounce jar chunky tomato pasta sauce or meatless spaghetti sauce

    Shredded cheddar cheese (optional)

    Directions

    1. In a small saucepan bring 1/2 cup water to boiling. Stir in uncooked rice. Reduce heat; cover and simmer for 10 minutes or until water is absorbed. Remove from heat; set aside.

    2. Meanwhile, remove 8 large outer leaves from the cabbage. In a 4-quart Dutch oven cook cabbage leaves, covered, in boiling water for 4 to 5 minutes or just until leaves are limp. Drain cabbage leaves. Trim the thick rib in the center of each leaf. Set leaves aside. Shred 4 cups of the remaining cabbage; place shredded cabbage in a 3-1/2- or 4-quart slow cooker. (Wrap and chill remaining cabbage for another use.)

    3. In a medium bowl combine beans, cooked rice, onion, and 1/2 cup of the pasta sauce. Evenly divide the bean mixture among the 8 cabbage leaves, using about 1/3 cup per leaf. Fold sides of leaf over filling and roll up. Pour about half of the remaining pasta sauce over shredded cabbage in cooker. Stir to mix. Place cabbage rolls on the shredded cabbage. Top with remaining pasta sauce.

    4. Cover and cook on low-heat setting for 6 to 7 hours or on high-heat setting for 3 to 3-1/2 hours. Carefully remove the cooked cabbage rolls and serve with the shredded cabbage mixture. If desired, sprinkle with cheddar cheese. Makes 4 servings.

*Note: To easily remove the cabbage leaves, place the cabbage head in boiling water for 2 to 3 minutes to loosen the outer leaves.

You can always go to http://www.1800topsoil.com to see if they have a local pro servicing your area. These guys at http://www.1800topsoil.com are somehow national. I used them in two states. Good luck! Report It
Reply:lol eat the rabbits!! you will have to put up tree guards to stop them from getting in.
Reply:catch them and cook them. The Joy of Cooking Cookbook will give you some wonderful recipes.
Reply:You can build a cage around them.

Remember though rabbits dig and tunnel, so they can pop right up in the cage!

There are some not so pleasant ways of controlling the rabbits, if you so choose.
Reply:mix a can of black or hot pepper with a cheap bag of white flour in the morning when the plants have dew on them or after watering when the plants are wet. Dust each plant with the mixture. It will stick to the plants is cheap and the rabbits hate it.

When your trying to make homemade betta fry new born food can you use cabbage in stead of lettace?

Live foods are best for betta fry (like microworms and freshly hatched baby brine shrimp). If you absolutely cannot provide either of these, boiled egg yolks are appropriate. Put a small piece between your CLEAN fingers, and rub them together. Dip your finger into the water to release particles small enough for the fry.

I've never heard anyone talk about using lettuce or cabbage. Bettas are carnivores, and cannot live well on plant matter, so I hope you're referring to an infusoria cultivation.

I'm assuming you already have betta fry, but for future spawns, I would take the time to cultivate live food. Everyone has to start somewhere, but please do more research next time.

Here is an article about cultivating insuforia.

I've got baby angelfish and I'm trying to work out this insuforia thing too.
Reply:Breeding bettas is for expert level fishkeepers, I believe you could use more research.
Reply:you can, but cabbage can cause alot of gas.
Reply:Yes, you can use cabbage in lieu of lettuce. Just be sure to crush the cabbage first to speed up its decomposition. I assume you will use this to culture infusoria.

  • I'm eating a pound and a half of raw green cabbage everyday, is this okay for my health?

    Hello everyone,

Is it okay to consume more than a pound of cabbage everyday? Besides the obvious risks of pesticide exposure from the cabbage, which is surprisingly low in pesticide residues -- just visit www.foodnews.org to find out where it scores, is there any risk that could stem from eating so much raw cabbage?

As far as cooking goes, is it okay to lightly boil cabbage before consumption, to maximize absorption of vitamins and minerals?

    Thanks!
I'm eating a pound and a half of raw green cabbage everyday, is this okay for my health?
    Wow. You must be gassy.
Reply:I enjoy taking cabbage but always end up with a bloated stomach. It may not be beneficial to feed on cabbage alone to get all nutrients.

Prepare cabbage soup and you can have all the goodness. You can try to stir-fry it with garlic too.
Reply:You can steam cook too. It is healthy and will not lose its

    nutrition values.
Reply:No it s not okay to consume that amount of any individual food . Your body is designed to deal with a variety of foods and too much of any one food really s not good for you. There are a number of key issues here. Cabbage while a nutritrious food does not contain all the require nutrients. Cabbage is quite bulky so it will supress your appetite again making it hard for you to get a balanced diet. I would start cutting back on the cabbage now, and start eating a variety of foods , besides being bettre for you its also more appetizing. While exposure to pesticides is a concern the damage you are doing by not eating a balanced diet will have much worse long term effects
Reply:I would say that rather than eating so much cabbage, why don't you try other vegetables and some fruit? You can lightly steam your vegetables, as boiling does take away quite a bit of the nutritional value, and this makes their digestion somewhat easier. Try making a stir fry to include lots of vegetables, or have a portion of cabbage, some broccoli, some cauliflower, and some carrots.
Reply:Cabbage is not bad by itselve. But too much on anything is bad, You also need other vitamins, minerals, fats, and proteins.
Reply:Not good for you. There is nothing wrong with cabbage per se, but you cannot eat that much of the stuff without neglecting other foods necessary to a balanced diet. As for cooking it, go ahead, and use the cooking water for food somehow as it will have some of the vitamins and minerals leached out during the cooking process.
Reply:The raw has more vitamin content than the cooked. Just be sure to not get too full of cabbage that you do not eat other foods that you need for a balanced diet. Also be careful that you don't blow up!!!! You must be ripe.
Reply:Eating any type of food in such large quantities may have some type of nutritional drawback. If you are only eating more than a pound cabbage a day then you may have serious problems nutrition wise. Also lightly boiling any type of vegetable will leach vitamins and minerals from the vegetable into the water you are boiling it in and will not increase absorption of nutrients. Steaming is your best bet when cooking vegetables. Even steaming will leach some nutrients from the vegetable. My concern is the obvious problems you may have with gas and bloating (two major cabbage symptoms). All things in moderation are good for you. That should be your rule of thumb on any diet. This includes calorie intake. Too much of a good thing always turns out bad in the long run.
Reply:wow, the fumes must be incredible!
Reply:Definitely okay to lightly boil the cabbage. And you can eat as much as you can stand. I bet you're going to the bathroom like crazy.

I always make it in the crock pot and it's ok. Saturday I went to A St. Paddy's day parade and my friend boiled it in a pot and it was out of this world. I'll do that Saturday. Just follow the directions on the package. Buy the one with Peppercorns included if you can.
Best way to make corned beef and cabbage?
CROCKPOT! Throw everything in there potatos, carrots, cabbage and corned beef and some water- voila! Set it and forget it.
Reply:In a crock pot, or if you plan on feeding many then in a roast pan on the slow cook setting. I also add red potatoes unpeeled, try for a uniform size. Then add the spices you like.
Reply:I just made a pot yesterday. cut up your cabbage in nice bite size pieces set aside. simmer your corned beef on low for acouple of hours. take the meat out and slice against the grain, add cabbage and meat back to the cooking liquid and simmer about 1/2 hour or untill the cabbage is tender. i also stuck afew potatos on top in same pot when those are fork tender you should be ready for a throwdown!!!!
Reply:I do the old way to cook my cabbage, I fry it down.I fry it then add a small chopped onion and a can of corn beef crumbled in there. To fry only put a very small amount of olive oil on the bottom of the pot(big enough to hold the amount of cabbage you want)fry a little put lid on to fry down, then stir and fry more til all is cooked down, then add the other ingredients. You may need a little water, but not always.
Reply:Night before but meat, an onion, and seasoning in the crock pot to cook; next morning add cabbage and new potatoes - This way you can enjoy the festivities with out standing over the stove

    1. The Cabbage Soup Diet Plan

    The Cabbage Soup Diet Explained

    By Gloria Edmonds

This one is almost certainly in the 'Fad' camp. And you REALLY have to like cabbages in order to try this diet! You probably won't be surprised to find that this 7 day diet plan requires you to eat cabbage soup, constantly. The rationale behind the Cabbage Soup Diet is that cabbage can somehow 'flush' fat from your body. Of course, this claim is unsubstantiated, and has no medical research to back it up.

While you have to basically eat a lot of cabbage soup, you can eat a few other things too. According to research done by staff at www.supadiet.com, a typical Cabbage Soup day might include all the cabbage soup you can eat, a couple of glasses of skinned milk, and an entire bunch of bananas. This, of course is a recipe for wind, and that side effect is something the proponents of the Cabbage Diet don't dwell on (much like Atkins Diet fans don't mention the bad 'Lion' breath it tends to give you!).

If the cabbage soup diet works at all, it is because the base foodstuff is low cal. This restricts your calorific intake, while simultaneously filling you full of fiber and filling your stomach which lessens hunger pangs. The cabbage soup diet claims you can lose up to 10 pounds in a single day, which is dangerous to the extreme, and definitely not regarded as safe practice by doctors. As a 'crash' diet, the initial weight loss tends to be mostly water, which is, of course, rapidly replaced. At www.supadiet.com, we therefore believe that as a long term solution to losing weight and keeping it off, the Cabbage Soup Diet probably has rather marginal utility.

Should you try it? If your doctor has no objections, and you have a mild fetish for cabbages, and an air-conditioned house, feel free. Otherwise, you will probably be better off following a more health-orientated diet.

Soup but not necessarily cabbage This diet is rational and works, but as others point out, any cream-free broth provides a filling low-cal meal replacement. If you're not into cabbage just try other vegetable soups - asian soups are great too. Soup for lunch, soup before dinner and avoid sugar, butter, cream, and fried foods. Simple.

CABBAGE STUFFED WITH BEEF, ZUCCHINI, AND HERBS

The health benefits: nearly a fifth of the RDA for vitamin C in 1/2 cup raw cabbage; magnesium from the zucchini; eggplant offers fiber.

    Makes 4 servings.

2 cabbages or Napa cabbages (1 1/2 lb each)

    1/4 cup fat-free chicken broth

    3 tbsp olive oil

    2 small zucchini, finely diced

    1 large tomato, finely diced

    1 sweet onion, finely chopped

    1 small eggplant, finely diced

    1 tbsp chopped garlic

    6 oz lean ground beef

1 tbsp each chopped fresh basil, parsley and thyme

    1/4 cup whole-grain breadcrumbs

    2 tbsp melted unsalted butter

Heat oven to 350°F. Cut cabbages in half from top to base. Cut out core; discard. Pull out inner leaves of each half, leaving 3 outer layers (reserve). Finely slice inner leaves. Heat broth and 2 tbsp oil in a medium sauté pan on medium. Add vegetables (plus sliced cabbage), garlic, and beef. Cook until vegetables are tender and meat is browned; add herbs; place in cabbage halves. Mix butter with breadcrumbs; place on top of cabbage; drizzle remaining 1 tbsp oil on top. Bake until tender, about 35 minutes. Season with salt and pepper. Serve hot.
