Cabbage how much water and for how long?

i am going to wash and cut up cabbage, i am not sure how to cut it i know everyone says in quarters but i do not know what that is, how much water, and i will cook for 25 minutes boiling on high heat in large pot on stove with spices and onions and green peppers is this ok

Quarters: cut in halfs, through the core. Cut each half into halfs. Now you can cut the core out, or you can leave it.



Bring water to boil, then put cabbage in. The cooking time depends on how sof do you want it to be. I'd say, cook it for 5 minutes, then poke if with a fork to see if it's ready. 25 minutes seems like an overkill to me.



To find out how much water do you need: put cabbage in the pot, cover with water. You can take the cabbage out and boil the water. You don't want too much water, or the cabbage will lose its taste. You don't need to keep it on high - just keep it barely boiling.

Cut head in half, then eat half in half. That is quartering. Now turn your knife on a 45o angle and cut out the piece of core on each quarter. Then chop the quarters in half once more.



Heat a huge skillet (w/ lid). You can put a little bacon, ham, or even onion in there if you like. Then add cabbage and maybe ? cup water, but no more than ? cup! Salt and pepper, and cram lid on. Let cook over med-high heat for about 5 min, then rearrange w/ tongs, put on lid, let cook another 5-7 min. Should be done after that.
Reply:There are some good answers up there...however, do NOT cover it with water...unless you like cabbage juice or use the juice in veggie soup later on.



I follow the suggestions others have given for cutting...in half, then in half again...%26amp; then I cut it some more into smaller pieces. Put in pan with a llittle bacon grease (southern way), a little salt %26amp; pepper, a smidgen of sugar ( brings out the flavor) %26amp; maybe 1/2 to 1 cup water (cabbage will cook down), cover pan w/ lid.%26amp; cook GENTLY until it is as crisp or soft as you want it...(test by piercing a piece w/ fork)...There...you have a cabbage dish.



I like mine very well cooked...very, very tender. Some people like their veggies crisper. And you can use butter instead of bacon grease or simply add a strip of bacon cut into pieces.



Simpler:

1...Put a little water in cooking pot (see above)

2...Cut up cabbage %26amp; put in pot w/ water

3...Add bacon grease ( or butter if preferred)

4...Add a lttle salt %26amp; pepper to taste (1 tsp salt or less %26amp; maybe 1/2 tsp pepper)

5...Add smidgen of sugar (1/8 to 1/4 tsp or so brings out flavor)

6...Cover, bring to boil, then turn down %26amp; cook on med. low heat 'til consistency you like.



PS This is not written in stone...you can a little mor or a little less of anything. You also can cook many veggies this way...add lots of onions if you cook squash...
Reply:Quarters means start where the big round stem is, cut it and everything below it in half. Take the big round stem out, lay the cabbage flat side on the board and cut it in two. Ditto for the other half.



Enough water to cover the cabbage. Believe me, you do not want your cabbage to scorch!



Sounds fine, though I always put a piece of meat in there, like sausage kielbasa, just something to add meaty flavor.



You know when it's done when the cabbage isn't crunchy anymore.
Reply:Quarters means cut it in half and then cut the halves in half. Just keep checking it while its cooking with a fork until its soft
