How could i combine both black eye peas and cabbage for a lucky new year's meal?

Two suggestions.....

The first.....throw together a pot of homemade veg soup.....Start with 2 large cans diced tomatoes....2 cans water.....onion...celery (if you like it, I do)....Salt and Pepper to taste.....Cook for few minutes until onion a little tender....Add 2 cups diced potatoes....1 cup frozen black eyed peas....1 cup frozen diced or sliced carrots, and any other veg you like. Cook for 20 minutes, then add 2 cups chopped cabbage...cook 10 more minutes....You have it all....Oh I almost forgot the seasoning.........2 TBLS chicken or beef boullion.....Added with cabbage........You have a delicious, fat free, low cal way to start the year!!!!!!!Don't forget the mexican cornbread on the side(gotta get some fat and calories somewhere!!!

Black-eyed pea salad

3 cups frozen black eyed peas....Steamed until tender...drain, and cool

1 cups shredded cabbage

1 small onion, finely diced

2 TBLS sweet pickle relish

1/2 tsp salt

1/2 tsp black pepper

1 boiled egg, peeled and chopped (OPT)

1/2 cup mayo or miracle whip

Toss all ingredients until well coated.....chill 3 hrs before serving....delicious side dish

How about making a cole slaw as a side dish? I would slice up the cabbage really thin and then add dressing and the beans. Let it all sit together for a few hours before serving.

Sounds like a recipe for explosive gas later, though.
Reply:I wouldn't combine them but make seperate dishes. They just don't pair well together.

What about sauteed cabbage with onions and potatoes?

For an appetizer this is good to get in your black eyed peas in a different way.

Reply:Each family has their own traditional New Years' meal.

My Southern family definitely did not have cabbage on New Years' Day. The only required fare was Hoppin' John, which was black-eyed peas and rice with hog jowls.

Peas = peace for the family

Jowls (hog jowls) = health for the family

Rice = riches for the family
Reply:We do pork %26amp; sour kraut (corned beef %26amp; cabbage in your case) new years eve 'till midnight, then start the country ham %26amp; black eyed peas in the slow cooker (I think I am gonna try adding rice too) so that whenever you wake up new years day you have a fabulous smelling dish to enjoy! The Corned beef %26amp; cabbage will be in the fridge from the night before. All together side by side, a great meal, or a good snack either one alone!
Reply:Eating Black Eyed Peas on new years is an old family tradition to bring good luck for the new year. I'm not sure about the cabbage. Black eyed peas and Hog jawl( eg...Thick bacon) fry it up combine with the B.E.P and that's good eats. Mmmmm good stuff. Happy New Year!
