1 Container (10 oz. or so) Mushrooms

Take the outer leafs layers off the cabbage, cut into bite size pieces, add to pot.

Clean carrots, cut into bite size pieces, and add to pot.

Slice mushrooms into thick slices, add to pot.

If you would like a spicy soup, add a small amount of curry or cayenne pepper now.

You can use beef or chicken bouillon cubes for seasonings. These have all the salt and flavors you will need.

Use about 12 cups of water (or 8 cups and the V8 juice), cover and put heat on low. Let soup cook for a long time - two hours works well. Season to taste with salt and pepper.

Why does the colour of red purple cabbage change when it is cooled?

Colour change in red purple cabbage is due to the pigment anthocyanin and when the cabbage is cooled the activity of anthocyanin decreases leading to a change in color.

Has anyone had success with the cabbage soup diet?

What were the positive/negative factors? Did you follow it up with a diet and keep losing weight??
Has anyone had success with the cabbage soup diet?
hahaha, my mom tried this years ago - basically the only thing I remember is that she, well you know, passed gas a lot and used the bathroom a lot - cabbabe will do that to ya you know

didn't do much for the weight loss though - except for cleaning you out
Reply:I have never seen any success or should i say long term success with any type of diet that restricts what a person eats or tells them to eat a certain type of miracle food. I have fought with my weight a long time and all of the ones I tried like that one, either did not work at all or worked for a little while then the weight came back. I am doing Weight Watchers now, and I may be biased, but this is the best thing I have done yet. It is not a diet so much as a lifestyle change
Reply:Never tried it, but I've heard that you'll get really tired of the soup and it is not worth it. ;s
Reply:Fad diets dont work. What happens is your body goes through shock and then you see weight loss. After a while your body will recognize what is happening and will adjust to the new routine. Weight loss will stop and you will gain back everything.
Reply:yes i have ,its okay you will lose weight but you will also gain it back and the soup is awful but if you like that kind of food you will do good ,till u get tired of not eating real food ,the first 3 days are the hardest ,you will get lots of energy by day 3, and this does clean your system out ,good luck

Proper way to raise cauliflower @ cabbage?

Cualiflowers can be quite temperamental and are not easy to grow. If you re new at this, stick to growing small cabbages and brussels sprouts at first.

They like an alkaline soil, so you need to apply lime the previous autumn, but don't worry too much if you haven't done this. buy small plants, and plant them at the suggested spacing (it varies for each type of cabbage).

You will need to put nets over them to keep off the birds and rabbits, and protect the young plants from slugs.

    2 crust pastry recipe

    2 Tbsp. olive oil

    1 red onion, chopped

1/2 large head red cabbage, chopped

    3 cloves garlic, minced

    3 Tbsp. balsamic vinegar

    1 tsp. sugar

    1/2 cup water

1 cup cubed Gruyere or Swiss cheese

    1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Prepare pie crust and divide dough into four pieces. Roll out each between waxed paper into 7" rounds. Fit each into a 4" tart ring, or simply put the crusts on two cookie sheets. Set aside.

Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Saute onion in olive oil in a large skillet until soft. Then add cabbage, vinegar, sugar, and 1/2 cup water. Cover pan and simmer for 10 minutes, until cabbage is soft, stirring frequently. Then uncover pan and cook for 5-8 minutes longer on medium high heat, stirring frequently, until liquid is absorbed.

Divide half of the cabbage mixture evenly among the pastry circles. If you aren't using the tart rings, just mound the mixture in the center of the circles of pastry. Sprinkle with Gruyere cheese cubes and grated Parmesan cheese, and top with remaining cabbage mixture. Fold crust edges over the top of the cabbage mixture, pleating to form a ruffled edge. Bake tarts at 425 degrees for 20-30 minutes. Remove tart rings and serve. Serves 4

Can you see cabbage juice as an indicator for acidic and basic substances?

    wat?
Can you see cabbage juice as an indicator for acidic and basic substances?
The question is just asking if cabbage juice can be used as a pH indicator, something that tells you if something is acidic, basic, or neutral.

    To answer your question...

Yes. Cabbage juice can be an effective indicator for acids and/or bases. This is because red cabbage juice turns pink if something is acidic, and green if something is basic.

    Any Recipes for Cabbage Rolls?

I love cabbage rolls, I may make them for dinner tonight as well:)

Here are some nice ones that I have either used or found helpful:

    1 large head of cabbage

1 to 1/2 pounds lean ground beef

1/2 cup instant rice or cooked rice

    1/2 teaspoon salt

    1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper

    1 egg, lightly beaten

    1/2 cup finely chopped onion

1/2 to 1 teaspoon cinnamon, divided (more or less, to taste)

1 can (10 1/2 ounces) tomato soup, undiluted

    1 can (14.5 ounces) tomatoes

    PREPARATION:

Tear the leaves off the cabbage and cook in boiling water or steam until wilted enough to be flexible. Cool. Mix ground beef, rice, egg, onion, and salt, pepper, and 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon together. Form a few tablespoons of the mixture into a cylinder, then roll up in a cabbage leaf. Secure rolls with toothpicks. Combine the soup and tomatoes in a Dutch oven. Place cabbage rolls in the Dutch oven. Sprinkle with about 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon. Cover and simmer for 1 1/2 to 2 hours.

    Reply:Ground Beef

    Ground Pork

    Cooked Rice (cooled)

    Onion (diced)

    Celery (diced)

    Salt

    Pepper

Cabbage leaves (core the cabbage head - gently pull leaves apart - blanch in hot water until softened)

Combine all ingredients except cabbage - starting at widest portion of cabbage place some of the meat mixture centered at the widest part - roll cabbage leaf just to cover meat - fold in edges of cabbage leaf and continue to roll into a packet. Place in oven proof pan (they can be touching each other). Now you can either use just water (just enough to cover rolls half way up) or crushed tomato with enough water to go half way up the rolls. Cover with foil nd bake at 350 Degree F for approx 45 minutes.
Reply:Others have given you okay options, but do NOT use minute rice. Only use short grain rice, slightly undercooked. I add sauteed onions and butter to the cooked rice, then cool the mixture.

Core the head of cabbage, get water boiling in a huge pot - then steam the cabbage, removing leaves as they soften.

What works AWESOME is to cool the leaves, then pile them in plastic bags and freeze them, even overnight. Then they are soft and pliable to roll.

Layer cabbage rolls in foil-lined roaster, fairly close together, alternating directions of layers (I do diagonals, because they come out easier later). Depending upon how many you make, I pour on tomato soup mixed with water, or tomato juice. Cover top with foil, then roaster cover.

Bake at 300 for hours and hours until softened. Check every hour, then half hour, to see if you need to add liquid.

Significance of eating corned beef, potatoes and cabbage on St. Patrick's Day?
Potatoes, cabbage, and boiled bacon were cheap but wholesome ingredients, easily obtainable, which provided the calories needed by a working person. Thus, the meal became a staple diet of the Irish working class. It is still popular today.

The corned beef must have replaced the bacon bit in some places because it is easier to obtain, probably even cheaper, and easier to keep and prepare.

But the meal is cheap, quick to prepare, and contains much goodness.
Reply:No, silly, it's not like Passover where the meal has symbolic significance. It's just traditional foods, to remind us of what our ancestors ate. I personally like to celebrate with Shamrock shakes from McDonald's (I'm too lazy to cook corned beef!).
    Reply:They are traditional Irish dishes.
Reply:It has nothing to do with St. Patric; it's just the preferred Irish meal.
Reply:Eating corn beef and cabbage started when the Irish moved to America and they couldn't find Irish bacon, but they found corn beef at there local Jewish shop. It was cheaper and easier to come by.
Reply:It was originally bacon potatoes and cabbage and the early settlers to America were looking for a substitute and found corned beef brisket to be a good alternative and cheap. Their is no real big significance of eating it st pats day it's just a traditional irish meal.
Reply:Corned beef, cabbage and potatoes is considered a typical Irish dish and St Patrick is he patron saint of Ireland.

Is cabbage and lettuce poison to a peach front concur?
Most veggies and fruits are safe for birds to eat. The only foods you should not feed your pet bird are chocolate, avocado, alcoholic beverages and caffeinated beverages. High fat and salty foods should also be avoided. I have personally fed my conure lettuce and had no adverse effects.
Reply:I never heard of that one but I do know that avocados are deadly for pet birds. I have a brown headed parrot that eats cabbage and lettuce so it is news to me. There are many good websites explaining what and what not to feed pet birds. Good Luck!

    Yield: 4 to 6 servings

    3 tablespoons olive oil

    1 large onion, chopped

    2 garlic cloves, minced

1 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes

    1/4 cup balsamic vinegar

    2 tablespoons brown sugar

6 cups finely sliced red cabbage

1 cup chopped and drained plum tomatoes from a can

    6 cups chicken stock

Salt and freshly ground black pepper

1/4 cup finely chopped fresh parsley

Sour cream and finely chopped fresh chives, as accompaniments

In a large heavy pot heat olive oil over moderate heat and cook the onions until translucent. Add the minced garlic and crushed red pepper flakes and cook, stirring, for 1 minute. Stir in the balsamic vinegar and the brown sugar and bring to a simmer. Add the cabbage and stir to combine. Add the tomatoes and the chicken stock and bring to a simmer. Season with salt and pepper, to taste. Simmer the soup, uncovered, for 30 to 40 minutes until the cabbage is very tender. Taste soup and adjust seasoning with more balsamic vinegar, brown sugar, salt and/or pepper. Stir in parsley. Serve hot with a dollop of sour cream and chives.

Would you try spagetthi with cabbage rolls?

No. Try boiling up some wide egg noodles instead of spaghetti for a side dish to go with the cabbage rolls...you could also put some caraway seeds on the noodles and add a little of sour cream as desired...yummy.

What is the size of a grown dwarf hamster? Is it ok for dwarf hamsters to eat shredded cabbage?

and something i wanna ask too. My dwarf hammie is getting a little too fat since she's eating LOTs of sunflower seeds. Anyway to make her lose weight? She is maybe only 2 to 3 months old and she is like a full grown hamster? help plzzz
What is the size of a grown dwarf hamster? Is it ok for dwarf hamsters to eat shredded cabbage?
MODERATION That is the word of the day. Sunflower seeds are OK - in moderation. Cabbage is OK - in moderation. Though dark colored lettuce is better. Iceberg is a definite no-no since is has no nutritional value and is only water and fiber. Unfortunately most rodents look on iceberg lettuce like candy. Most commercial food mixes contain sunflower seeds along with other seeds and pellets for a nutritionally balanced hamster diet. Supplemented with occasional treats of fresh fruits and vegetables will be good for any hamster. But you need to work the fresh stuff in gradually so as not to upset her stomach.

just cut back a little on how much food is in her dish and make sure she gets plenty of excercise.

sunflower seeds tend to make them get fat pretty quick, too.
Reply:If you think she is overweight, then she probably is. All you really can do is control how much she eats. Just give her less than what she usually gets, it shouldn't take too long before she is back to a normal weight. Yes, they can have cabbage, it is really good for them.
Reply:well you should buy dietary food for it your can get it at your local pet store and you should buy a hamster wheel for it to exercise on plus it is one of the hamsters favorite toy
Reply:dwarf hamsters will NEVER get the size of a normal hampster...and yes they can eat cabbage

you must have gotten a regular hamster, because dwarf hamsters only get two inches long

just make sure you have a wheel for it, they have high matabolisms so they usually don't get fat

Do u no what swamp cabbage stew is?

It is a cabbage stew that it made with a special type of cabbage called "swamp". It is the heart of a cabbage palm, which is the official tree of Florida. Can also be called a palmetto palm or a sabal palm.

This is a recipe that was given to me:

    UNCLE WILLIE'S SWAMP CABBAGE STEW

    1 med. swamp cabbage

    3 pieces fatback

    2 cans of tomato

    Pinch of thyme

    2 lg. onions, chopped

    1 tsp. white sugar

1 pod of hot green pepper, chopped up

Fry fatback, onions, and chopped swamp cabbage until starting to brown. Add tomatoes, sugar, pepper, and thyme. Simmer until it thickens and tomatoes cook down. Add another pinch of thyme 10 minutes before it's done. Serve on rice. If you don't live along the Carolina, Georgia, North Florida coast, Hearts of Palm in a can will work. But don't cook them too long.

    Reply:The main points are to

    1. take the leaves and cut away most of the stalk to make it thinner - so that where the stalk WAS there is only a thin bit left - almost as thin as the cabbage leaf surrounding it.

    2. boil the leaves until they're a bit soft. Otherwise you can't wrap them around anything..!

After doing that it should be easier, even if they're not the same as your baba's - whoever that is!

    Hi,

They're known as Flowering Kales or as Ornamental Cabbage.

I think that you are looking for the "Dwarf" variety.

this flower is often used in contempory floral design.

I love this flower and have used it when in season in my arrangements.

In gardens and container gardening you will find the larger specimens.

Brassica oleracea is the scientific name and it should be noted that brussel sprouts, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, mustard, cale, and kohlrabi are all this same species. In each case, a different part of the plant was selected for: the flowers for broccoli and cauliflower; the leaves for kale, etc. A testament to the wonders of Artificial selection.

If you are breastfeeding, be careful not to use them more than 30 minutes at a time a couple times per day, or you will dry up your milk too much!

If you are not breastfeeding, you can just leave them in until they are soft and wilted, then change to new leaves.

Lactation consultants frequently suggest cabbage leaves to reduce swelling in moderate to severe engorgement. References to cabbage compresses for swelling and engorgement date back to the early 1800's. Cabbage compresses have been used to reduce the swelling in sprains and broken bones. Research data is sparse but published studies and anecdotal reports seem to support its value in reducing breast engorgement.

The common green cabbage (Brassica capitata) is used for engorgement therapy. Cabbage is known to contain sinigrin (allylisothiocyanate) rapine, mustard oil, magnesium, oxylate and sulphur heterosides. Herbalists believe that cabbage has both antibiotic and anti irritant properties. It is theorized that this natural mixture of ingredients helps decrease tissue congestion by dilating (opening) local capillaries (small blood vessels) improving the blood flow in the area.

Golabki / Golumbki, whats the difference in this Polish stuffed cabbage?

The difference is pronunciation. Golabki is the Polish spelling, but the 'a' has a squiggle under it, which changes the pronunciation of that letter to kind of a 'um' sound.

? = Nasal as the ON in the French BON.

So the second spelling is more likely an English way to spell it closer to the way it sounds.

Let's see if Yahoo will post this one properly:

The Polish letter looks like this ?

The English one is like this: a

I'm not sure when it started, but in Europe, Russia in particular, mothers tell their children this. They don't want their kids to know where they came from or how. Sorry if I didn't help you much, but I grew up hearing parents telling their kids that they found them in a cabbage.

    Ingredients:

    1 pound ground beef

    1 1/2 cup cooked rice

    cabbage leaves

    1 large can tomato juice

    Salt %26amp; pepper to taste

    Directions:

Mix ground beef, rice and salt %26amp; pepper together. Take a good spoonful of mixture and roll up in cabbage leaves. Secure with a toothpick and place in slow cooker. Continue to do this until all the mixture is gone. Add tomato juice covering the cabbage rolls. Cover and cook on high for 6-7 hours.

Reply:My grandmother had a very easy recipe:

    1 medium green cabbage

    1 lb. lean ground beef

2 cups cooked white rice (slightly undercooked)

    1 large onion, finely diced

    Salt %26amp; pepper to taste

1 large can of tomato sauce (the unseasoned stuff)

    Heat the oven to 350o

Pull off the really dark cabbage leaves %26amp; discard. You want the lighter, inner ones, about the size of your hand. Carefully pull them off %26amp; blanch them in boiling water. Cook the rice %26amp; let it cool. Sautee the diced onion in a little oil. Put the cooled rice, onion %26amp; ground beef in a large bowl, add the salt %26amp; pepper and mix thoroughly. Take a few good spoonfuls of the meat mixture %26amp; spoon it into the center of the cabbage leaf, and roll it like a burrito. Cut out the tough stem if you need to, and DO NOT over-stuff it!. Line the rolls up in a baking pan (I use a 13x9 glass pan) %26amp; cover liberally with the canned tomato sauce. Bake this for about 45 minutes covered with foil, until the filling is cooked thru. (they are done if the temperature of the filling is about 155o)

    Serving Size : 4

    1 head white cabbage

1 lb ground meat (pork and/or beef, or even lamb)

    2 whole eggs

    1 cup sour cream

    ? cup dry rice

    2 onions

    3-4 buds garlic

    2 Tablespoons flour

    3 Tablespoons vegetable oil

    3 Tablespoons paprika powder

    parsley, salt, pepper, caraway seeds

To assemble and cook the cabbage rolls

    1. Cabbage leaves

Peel onions and garlic and chop finely. Discard the outer leaves of the cabbage head; select eight large robust leaves and cook these in salted water. Reserve this water for later use. Quarter the rest of the cabbage head, remove stalk and chop cabbage into one-inch pieces.

Don′t worry if the leaves you remove break; after cooking and before stuffing, you can always take two broken leaves and roll them as one, as I did in this recipe.

    2. Ground meat

Cook the rice tender for about five minutes and drain if necessary. Thoroughly mix the ground meat, the cooked rice, eggs, half the onions and the garlic with 1 Tablespoon paprika, plus salt and pepper to taste.

    3. Stuffing

Spread the cooked cabbage leaves on your clean countertop and divide the meat on them, rolling them up as if you were making a package. No fastening is required as the meat will stiffen and the rolls (roulades) will bind; besides, they will not be moved or turned as they are cooked.

    4. The cooking

Lightly sauté remaining onions and garlic in oil and add the chopped cabbage. Stir and sauté until cabbage is heated through. Add paprika and mix, but do not roast the paprika as it will get a bitter taste. Add 3 cups reserved cabbage water (or vegetable broth.) Season with caraway seeds, salt and pepper, and place the cabbage rolls in this stewed cabbage. Cover the pot and cook for about 30 minutes.

Remove the cooked cabbage rolls and place them on a plate to keep warm. Mix half of the sour cream with flour, add to the cabbage stew, and stir as it thickens.

    5. Presentation

Make a bed of the cabbage stew on the serving plate, place the cabbage rolls on the stewed cabbage and garnish with the rest of the sour cream and freshly chopped parsley. Plain boiled potatoes go well with this dish.

    Diced onion, celery as desired

Salt, pepper, and garlic or garlic salt to suit your taste

    1 lg. can tomatoes

    3 heads of cabbage

Hey be creative and spice it up!

Boil rice and drain. (This quickens cooking time.) Core 3 heads of cabbage. Place each head core down, one at a time in a large pot of hot water. Steam leaves until they can be taken off the head easily. (Use 2 forks to pull apart.) Steam leaves only long enough to be pliable. Do not overcook. Drain off water and cool. Save smaller leaves of cabbage from center.

Mix hamburger, rice, celery, onion, salt, pepper, and garlic together.

Slice center leaves of cabbage and place on the bottom of a large pot. Take each leaf of cabbage and cut off heavy rind. Place cabbage leaf in palm of hand. Put a ball of hamburger mixture in cabbage and roll up. Tuck in both ends.

Place side by side in the pot alternating layers until all the hamburger mixture is used. Slice any remaining cabbage and place on top of the cabbage rolls. Smash tomatoes with a potato masher and pour them over the cabbage and cabbage rolls. Bring to a boil. Reduce to a low heat and simmer for 1 hour.

Where to find snack time Cabbage Patch Kid?
I just found one upstairs in a box of old stuff and my kids are playing with it. Luckily they don't have really long hair and they are not little kids anymore! How much do you want to pay for a Snacktime Kid? This one is caucasion, brunette, blue eyes and wears a purple jumpsuit with the CPK logo. Several pieces of food and attached backpack. No box, but she's in great condition.

8 ounces egg noodles, cooked until just tender, drained and rinsed in cold water

    3 cups 2% low-fat milk

    1/2 teaspoon caraway seeds

In a saucepan warm the milk until it just starts to bubble around the edge of the pan.

remove from heat (watch your milk that it doesn't scorch on the bottom).

In a skillet, melt butter, saute the cabbage until tender, about 5 minutes.

Butter a 3 quart oven proof dish, in even layers add 1/2 of the cooked noodles, then 1/2 of the cabbage then add the ham.

Top with remaning cabbage and then the noodles.

In a bowl beat the scalded milk with the eggs and caraway seeds.

    Pour over the cabbage/noodles.

Does the cabbage soup diet really work?

I am trying to loose about 40 pounds and would like to know what type of diet is the fastest without being too unhealthy.
Does the cabbage soup diet really work?
I lost twenty pounds in two weeks on it, however, it is not something you can stick to. If you' re looking to jump start your diet, then try it. But then you also need to change your diet FOREVER, and the cabbage soup is not gonna work in the long run. You also need to really like the taste of the soup. I added plenty of hot sauce to mine to flavor it. Good luck.

Reply:I think any fad diet will do more harm than good - you can just eat what you eat now but just eat less and exercise - there's no magic pill or quick fix - instead of eating 2 tacos, eat one - instead of regular soda, drink diet or water - little changes over the long run make big differences

I have some red, and green cabbage in the fridge..... what should I do with it for supper tonight??
I would shred the cabbage, some of both for color variation, I then render the fat from some bacon. I combine chopped onion and garlic into the pan of bacon fat and sweat then till the onions are translucent, Next I take chopped Granny Smith apples and the cabbage and cook this in the onion garlic mixture, Now this is ready to eat but for me I like to add a cap full or two of my favorite vinegar, allow most of the vinegar to cook off and serve warm. this is great with pork and potatoes. Oh remember to season with salt and pepper, do this to you taste, or use your favorite spices. cabbage is inexpensive and last a long time in the frig, so if you like to experiment with recipes, cabbage is a great veggie to use.

If i add red cabbage juice now purple in color to some household products what changes in color changes will?

    there be if any.

    Vinegar,

    baking soda,

    water,

    ammonia,

    clear soda,

    laundry detergent

    shampoo

    and milk
If i add red cabbage juice now purple in color to some household products what changes in color changes will?
LOL! I just finish doing this Lab, and discussing it with my professor.

The thing is that red cabbage juice doesn't have set colors as red or blue like the litmus paper. So, you need to take into consideration that each household color will have their own color. It also depends if you pour the same amount of household product in each tube.

    Vinegar- magenta

    baking soda- green

    lemon juice- pink lemonade

    soda water- pink

    drain cleaner- yellow

    detergent- purple

    baking soda- blue.

With this you probably recorded the pH in each solution, and did the litmus paper test (which this is the one that really turn blue or red). You are suppose to compare the litmus answers with the pH answer, and from there you get the pattern for the red cabbage juice.

I just found this website above that can help you a lot to understand more about red juice cabbage.

Why do they use cabbage leaves to help stop breastfeeding?

Application of cabbage leaves treats swelling. It can be used for a twisted ankle, for instance, as well as to stop milk production. When the breasts stop swelling, milk production drops. And, no, it is *not* an old wive's tale. It is, in fact, used in some hospitals to *safely* help dry up a mother's milk supply when she chooses not to nurse or (in very limited amounts) to treat engorgement. All the drugs that have been used in the past have had terrible side effects--death chief among them--so cabbage is a great alternative.
Why do they use cabbage leaves to help stop breastfeeding?
IT DONT IT DRIES UR MILK UP IF YOU DONT WANT TO BREAST FEED THATS WHAT MY DR TOLD ME AND IT WORK BUT I WANTED TO FEED MY BABY BUT HE WOULD TAKE IT CAUSE THEY GIVE HIM A BOTTLE AS SOON AS HE WAS BORN I HAD TO REST SO THEY FEED HIM

Reply:i didnt use them to stop breast feeding but i did use them when my boobs got engorged freeze the leaves and place them on swollen boobs to relieve the pressure dont know why it worked but it did
Reply:its really hard to explain they told me that if youre not breastfeeding and lay the baby on your chest or anything with warmth too it on ur chest it will cause the milk to get hard in your boobs and it will hurt really bad cabbage leaves its got something in the leaves that will make it go aaway, they also tell you to ware a tight bra where ur breast dont have any room to move around or bounce what not
Reply:The milk would give the baby gas and he would want to stop drinking.

This is not a recognized medical practice.

I am looking for the recipe for braised red cabbage from J. Alexander's Restuarant?

    Braised Red Cabbage

    1 red cabbage (2 to 2 1/4 lbs)

1 large onion, cut thin slices

    1/2 cup currants

    3 tablespoons cider vinegar

    2 tablespoons sugar

    1 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper

    1 tablespoon oil

1/2 cup chicken stock, plus more

Cut out core of cabbage and discard any tough or discolored outside leaves.

Slice cabbage in half or quarters, then slice lengthwise into 1/8-inch shreds.

You should have about 12 cups.

Toss cabbage and onion in large nonstick skillet and add currants, vinegar, sugar, salt, pepper, oil and stock.

Bring to boil over high heat, then cover.

Reduce heat to medium and braise, stirring occasionally, until there is only a small amount of liquid left and cabbage is moist and just slightly crunchy, about 40 to 45 minutes.

(If skillet starts to dry before cabbage is done, add a little more stock and continue cooking.) Adjust seasonings and serve.

Comments: You can vary this dish to suit your taste or ingredients on hand.

Use regular or savoy cabbage; add minced garlic, apple slices or caraway seeds; or use part red wine or apple cider in the braising liquid.

How does wearing green, eating cabbage, and getting drunk on beer honor St. Patrick?

Okay, so I read all of the responses to someone elses question about who St.Patrick was. He drove the snakes out of Ireland. How did he do that? Did it have something to do with the color green, cabbage and beer?

How does wearing green, eating cabbage, and getting drunk on beer honor St. Patrick?
Actually, the snakes part isn't a myth, but it isn't literal either. the driving snakes out of Ireland refers to the fact that he brought Christianity to Ireland and drove out the pagan druidism. The only explanation I can give for that is the power of God in him.

Green is the color that is most closely associated with Ireland, so wearing green is a common practice, unless you're protestant, in which case you might wear orange, but that isn't well known and is considered an insult to many irish folks, since they claim Patrick was Catholic, but the Catholic church proper hardly existed at the time, and definitely not as the entity it is today.

Cabbage isn't really found in Ireland, I think that one started in America.

Beer. Well... it's beer, who needs a reason? Irish people are stereotyped as being heavy drinkers, though I'm Irish and I've never touched a drop, but oh well, here's to stereotypes.
Reply:Irish people are known for the drinking. I am not speaking for all of them.
Reply:Like most other Irish people, St. patrick was cabbage eating drunk during his day. For some reason, the Irish believe these are the traits that should be celebrated. I think they chose the color green, because that is the color your face gets when drinking and eating all day.
Reply:Well, as many people have said, St. Patrick driving the snakes from Ireland is a myth. In America it seems that this is the one day of the year were Irish Americans celebrate their heritage. This is were the color green and cabbage come in. I saw a program on the History Channel last year about St. Patrick's day, and it was said that since St. Patrick's Day fell during Lent, it was kind of like a break, so that is where the alcohol comes in. Also, everyone seems to like a good party, and for some people that means having beer.
Reply:One of the better explanations of St. Patrick's Day is found here.

    http://www.history.com/minisites/stpatri...
Reply:None of these things have anything to do with what St. Patrick did. Like most other holidays, St. Patrick´s Day is just another excuse to get drunk and be proud of your heritage.
Reply:Green for The Emerald Isle (which Ireland is known as)

Cabbage is one of the more common vegetables in Ireland (along with the potato). Corned Beef and Cabbage is a common Irish dish.

The beer? This might a bit stereotypical (and forgive me if it comes out that way) but the Irish are reknowned for their drinking. Guiness is a major producer of beer in Ireland.

St. Patrick is the patron Saint of Ireland so doing anything heavily associated with Ireland is honoring him.
Reply:None of this is about honoring St. Patrick, nearly as much as it is about celebrating being Irish. St. Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland, and so the Irish brought his holiday to the US and the rest of the world. But it's really just about Irish pride in the US (although in Ireland, it's got more of a religious connotation).

    Specific to your questions:

The snakes out of Ireland didn't actually happen, but it's more of a metaphor for the fact that he helped convert Ireland to Christianity (the snakes driven out being the devil, pagans, etc)

Cabbage is a staple food for Irish.

Drinking... well... we know THOSE stereotypes (which I resemble... :) ).

    As for wearing green:

Historically, it comes from the fact that under the English domination, people were actually not allowed to wear green. Because to Irish, green represented their country (take a look at any landscape picture of Ireland and you know why), the English didn't want to see it.

Today, Irish (and non-Irish who are Irish for the day) wear green (usually a shamrock in the lapel) to symbolize their Irish identity and make up for when they feared wearing it and getting killed. Nowadays, you wear green to support the Irish, so if you are caught NOT wearing it, then you get pinched.

Under the English, if you were caught speaking Gaelic (the traditional Irish language) or wearing green, they would kill you. One of the more traditional Irish songs is called The Wearing of the Green. I've included the liyrics below:

O Paddy dear, an' did ye hear the news that's goin' round?

    The shamrock is forbid by law to grow on Irish ground;

St. Patrick's Day no more we'll keep, his colour can't be seen,

For there's a cruel law agin the wearin' o' the Green.

I met with Napper Tandy, and he took me by the hand,

And he said, "How's poor old Ireland, and how does she stand?"

She's the most distressful country that ever yet was seen,

For they're hangin' men an' women there for the wearin' o' the Green.

Then since the colour we must wear is England's cruel red,

Sure Ireland's sons will ne'er forget the blood that they have shed,

You may take a shamrock from your hat and cast it on the sod,

It will take root and flourish there though underfoot it's trod.

When law can stop the blades of grass from growin' as they grow,

And when the leaves in summer-time their colour dare not show,

Then will I change the colour, too, I wear in my caubeen

But 'till that day, please God, I'll stick to wearin' o' the Green.

But if at last our colour should be torn from Ireland's heart,

    Her sons with shame and sorrow from the dear old isle will part;

I've heard a whisper of a land that lies beyond the sea

Where rich and poor stand equal in the light of freedom's day.

O Erin, must we leave you driven by a tyrant's hand?

Must we ask a mother's blessing from a strange and distant land?

Where the cruel cross of England shall nevermore be seen,

And where, please God, we'll live and die still wearin' o' the green!
Reply:The cabbage and crooned beef this is more Irish American then Irish. I think it was a take off of a dish made with beef and bacon with some cabbage and carrots mixed with potato.

the green is part of the flag green for catholics orange for the Protestants and white for unity between them. most of ire lend is catholic and st paddy was Catholic.

true Irishman drink stout IE Guinness ( please do not call Guinness a beer it is insulting)

there never was snakes in Ireland but the nth is cool any way
Reply:Have you never met an Irish person?

The whole driving out the snakes is a nice myth thing. Though if everyone did get drunk and stomped around a bunch, they probably would smoosh all the snakes and then there would be none left.

Do cabbage burgers/cabbage rolls freeze well?
because cabbage is similar to lettuce, I cannot imagine is freezing well at all unless it is already cooked and limp. Meaning it is composed of a lot of water, when this water freezes the cell membranes expand, thus when thawed the cabbage is limp and mushy. I am sure that things with cabbage in them freeze well, i.e. soup...but your best bet is to refridgerate.

    Corned Beef and Cabbage?
    Corned Beef and Cabbage

    6 servings

    Prep: 15 minutes

Cook: Low 10 to 12 hours, High 5 to 6 hours

    Ingredients

1 3- to 4-pound corned beef brisket with spice packet

1/2 small head cabbage, cut into 3 wedges

4 medium carrots, peeled, and cut into 2-inch pieces

    1 medium onion, quartered

2 medium yellow potatoes, cut into 2-inch pieces

    1/2 cup water

    Directions

    1. Trim fat from meat. If necessary, cut brisket to fit into a 5- to 6-quart slow cooker. Sprinkle spices from packet evenly over meat; rub in with your fingers. Place cabbage, carrots, onion, and potatoes in the slow cooker. Pour water over vegetables. Top with brisket.

    2. Cover and cook on low-heat setting for 10 to 12 hours or on high-heat setting for 5 to 6 hours. Transfer meat to a cutting board. Thinly slice against the grain. Serve vegetables with a slotted spoon. Makes 6 servings.
Reply:Just boil and then simmer it one hour to one pound. Add the cabbage in at the last 45 mins. Some people like to use beer instead of water.

The Irish don't really eat corned beef and cabbage, but sweeping generalizations are hard to erase. Enjoy anyway. Serves four.

The "corned" in corned beef means that it's been cured with salt. You buy it already "corned."

on 11/22/2005 It's easier to use the fresh baby carrots found in the produce section of your grocery store. I use them when carrots are required for stews, soups and boiled dinners.

on 11/22/2005 INSTEAD OF USING WHOLE CARROTS, YOU MAY USE BABY CARROTS, THESE CAN BE FOUND IN THE FREEZER SECTION OF MOST FOOD STORES.
Reply:I assume you've purchased a pre-packaged corn beef brisket with a packet of seasoning.

    I do it this way.

Put the corn beef in the crock with seasoning packet and water to cover. Throw in a couple of large carrots. Cook on high until the meat is fork tender.

As soon as the meat is done slice your cabbage in half. Then cut your halves into three or four wedges. Put these in a large pot. Pour juices from the crock pot over the cabbage and simmer it until it reaches desired tenderness. (10 - 20 minutes depending on the size of your cabbage.)

I don't do the cabbage in the crockpot because I think it over cooks and looses flavor.

I usually dice three or four potatoes and cook them with the cabbage. But, you don't have to. Both the carrots and potatoes are optional. We just like them.

Has anyone heard of freezing a head of cabbage before preparing pigs in the blanket?

Yes, You could do that instead of blanching the leaves. But you would have to let them defrost first of course. It will make the leaves more pliable and keep them from breaking while stuffing and rolling. I would normally boil them for a few seconds though.
Has anyone heard of freezing a head of cabbage before preparing pigs in the blanket?
No,I have never heard that, but I can't see why not, because once it thaws out, it will be easy to work with too, gotta try it next time I make some pigs in the blanket, ought to be easier then messing with hot water, thanks
Reply:No, I haven't. But, then I don't know what a head of cabbage has to do with pigs in a blanket, anyway......I thought pigs in a blanket were hot dogs, or sausages wrapped in crescent rolls and then baked. Cabbage?
Reply:Don't understand your question but I have frozen cabbage from my garden before and then cook in roasts or fry.

Does anyone know what to use in stuffed cabbage for the sauce?

Some people use tomato soup from the can to make the sauce and others use canned tomatoes...I prefer the tomatoes...

    STUFFED CABBAGE ROLLS

    1 head cabbage

    3 tablespoons butter

    1 medium onion

    2 cloves garlic, minced

    2 cups tomato sauce

    1/4 cup water

    1 teaspoon allspice

    salt and pepper

    1/4 cup brown sugar

    1 1/2 cups cooked rice

    1 lb ground beef

    Grease 9X13 dish.

    Preheat oven to 350.

Bring lg. pot salted water to boil.

Core cabbage and put it in the pot, cover and boil gently for 4 or 5 minutes.

    Drain well and set aside.

Saute' onion and garlic in butter til soft.

Add tomato sauce, water, allspice, salt and pepper.

Simmer 15 minutes remove about 15 outer leaves of cabbage and set aside for wrapping rolls.

Chop remaining cabbage coarsely and spread over the bottom of the dish.

Sprinkle the brown sugar over cabbage and lightly salt and pepper it.

Put 3/4 sauce into a mixing bowl with the rice and beef and mix well.

Divide filling into approximately 12 parts and roll each in a leaf.

Place them seam side down on the chopped cabbage.

Spoon a little of remaining sauce on each roll.

Cover top with remaining leaves and bake for 1 hour.
Does anyone know what to use in stuffed cabbage for the sauce?
my mom doesn't make stuffed cabbage with a sauce inside. she takes ground beef with spices and stewed tomatos w/rice. once wrapped in the cabbage she lines the bottom of the pot with the outter layer cabbage leaves. once the pot is filled with the cabbage rolls she dumps in regular tomato juice from the cans and tops it off with sourkraut.

while it's cooking the combo of tomato juice and sourkraut make a yummy sauce over it.
Reply:Stuffed cabbage needs a hint of allspice in the tomato sauce.....
Reply:You can use plain tomato paste. Just add sugar, vinegar or lemon juice, and salt/pepper, hint of marjoram, some beef broth, and a bit of Maggi to taste. Meat in the stuffed cabbage will release additional flavor while cooking in the sauce. Don't make it thick as the water will evaporate during cooking. Traditional Polish dish as it is does not call for a thick sauce.
Reply:Best tasting sauce for something like this is tomato soup mixed with a half a can of water. I use it for my Stuffed Peppers as well but then I don't dilute it.
Reply:I make a tomatoe sauce with white wine that I place over the rolls before baking. I am not sure what is traditional.
    Reply:I use pasta sauce myself.
Reply:the sauce needs to be a bit of a tangy sweet sour so add some brown sugar %26amp; apple cider vinegar to your tomato sauce until you get the flavor you want.....
Reply:stuffed cabbage? we use classic tomato sauce for that... or if you want you can also use bechamel or mornay sauce.

  • Last cabbage question from me...I swear! Can you freeze raw cabbage?

I never thought you could do that, but someone mentioned it in a previous question.

If you can, how would you? Wouldn't it have to be blanched or cooked first?

Obviously, if you did, it would only be usable for cooked recipes, but how would it taste?

    Anyone ever done it?
